A fuge is used to grow macro algae to export nutrients. It also adds water volume to your system which is good. No you don't have to have one but they are beneficial.

Is the back of the stand open? Could a 24-30 Length inch tank fit in there if inserted from the back? I will never have another tank with out a refugium. You can put your heater, skimmer, UV ect... in there. And you can keep a constant main tank water level. You can hook up drip for top offs and chemicals. There is just a bunch you can do not to mention the benifit of additional volume and filtering.

A 10G is 16LX10WX12H I think. I had one that size and I bought a $10 Walmart 10G tank and made a refugium for $20. It fit a skimmer. I bet you could also cut a square out of the partition to run whatever you need through there to the other compartment. I am NOT saying remove the compartment entirely! But IMO, a 6 X 6 square or so would not comprimise the strength. The weight of the tank is on the perimeter. Go for it!

I never could get a filter to work in the 10g (with out auto top off) because of the varying water level. You can put in some floss clipped across one of the baffles to filter if you need to. No real need for a regular filter IMO. Also, be carefult to factor into the height of the baffles/chambers how much water will drain to the rgm when the pumps are cut off. My first attempt, I made the chambers too high and there was not enough differential between running and not running....if that makes sense.
