my friend told me to get a 55 gal. tank and use that, but buying another tank that big is just too much. Also, if i put my heaters in my sump, won't that cause algae growth in it?

Are you planning to put it under your tank? 20 or 30 gallon would be fine. All my equipment is in my sump, I have no problem with algae growth in it because it is not lit. Nothing flows through it but water.

the bigger the better on the sump. Making a sump out of a 55 gallomn tank is cheaper than buying a average size wet/dry from a store. Buy the 55 gallon tank as the sump, it will only cost you at the most 99 bucks....

yes, im planning to put the sump under my 180 gal. tank. I'm going to use a protein skimmer and two magnum 350 canister filters. so will the 55 gal. tank do well as my sump then?

No it will be too tall to allow you to service the equipment in the sump easily. I would recomend getting a shorter tank. I use a 40 gallon sump under my 180. Only 14" tall though. Still too tall IMO to get adequte service to my stuff in sump. The shorter it is, the easier it is to get stuff in and out of it.
Good Luck

hmm. yeah thats a good point. the pet store that i work at sells some tanks that are shot and long. Now if I get a 30 gal long tank, do you think that should be plenty?

wamp is right, it will be a little on the tall side.. but if you have the clearance to get the proten skimmer in and out with no problem I would get the 55. If you will not have the clearance to be able to get the protien skimmer in and out then go with a smaller sump. Why are you going with canister filters? Your not going to use bio-balls? or both?

i'll probaby buy the the tank, stand and canopy, then figure out what would be the largest sump i can get without interfearing with getting the skimmer in and out.
I was told that the magnum 350 canister filters would be good for my filtration. I don't really know what the bio-balls are, i would probably use whatever filtration came with the magnum. Is there somthing else you would recommend?

wait,
get the dimension of the stand first and decide the sump size.
180 G is a large tank.
I would not recommend move them around much.
Sometime you can not fit a sump into the stand's door.
But you can put the same sump from the top down. Without the tank being on top of the stand you can do it easily. Also get the internal overflows dimensions, so you can placed the sump to where you think it will be the most efficient for your routine maintain and plumping.
