A sump isnt required, but most, like me use it to hide all the equipment on the back of your tank. Its a tank that you put under the display tank, again, to hide all equipment, and sometimes people grow macroalgae in it. In order to have a sump you have to have an overflow box and return pumps for the water to pump into and out of the sump. Hope this helps!

IMHO I think if you want to attempt to replicate a natural environment the least amount of man made items visible is a plus. I think a sump is a perfect tool to help this process...it allows you to place all EQ in the bottom tank like the above post stated, it also increased your total water volume...since bigger volumes means more forgiveness when it comes to fluctuations in nitrates and salinity and such it can be a bonus...My new tank will have no man made signs at all...there is a concealed closed loop system in the rockwork and the overflow box is simply part of the back of the tank...and it is the only thing one might consider man made, but hey so is the tank itself...
