IMO, best to pull it out. That way it does not get snaged or caught on things as the fish swims around and maybe can heal quicker. How you catch it !!. good luck and try to cause as less stress to the fish as possible.

I have never seen anything like that. Love that triger. I have a yellow tang and a triger like that as well. I think if I could catch it in a clear countaner then I might try and pulling it out it looks like it is about to come out on its own. was it a bone in the fin?

I've never seen that but leaving it in might stress him out more or he might end up injuring himself further .....contain him and tweeze it out your best option.....try it with a large net ....keep him in the water and see if you cant pull it out...try not to flip him out too much.

Wow, that is a difficult situation. Can I ask how long it has been like this? Also, since you first noticed it, has the tang gotten worse (as far as behavior and eating)? My reasons for asking is because if he is getting worse, as far as acting skittish and eating less, I would probably try to take it out of him very carefully and very slowly.
I think it would also be a good idea to also send this over to Bob Fenner at WWM. Maybe he has experienced something like this. He is very helpful with problems and responds within a few days.
The reason I say this is because I have never experienced something of this nature.

The bone has been out for a couple of hours, his behavior is like a normal tang, eats good, swims good, loves the camera, I guess when I get home I'll try to pull it out, it definetly does look like it's about to come out on its own, i'll update tommorrow

well I would not touch it yet then. If he can get it out, that will be a lot less stressful for both you and the fish.

I would not try to immediately catch the fish...The fish is already stressed out from what ever caused the dorsal to be broke, they use the dorsal spines along with the spines at the base of their caudal fins for defense. Watch the puffer and the trigger for aggression toward the tang or if you have another tang in the tank that could be the cause also. The bone/cartilage will probably fall out in a few hours or it will annoy the fish enough where he will rub on a few rocks to dislodge it himself. Keep the the tank light off or dimmer than usual to keep the aggression down in the tank for the next day or so. If not feeding a vitamin supplement, use a good one such as selcon or boyds vita chem to help boost the fish's immune system. The fish should be OK
