What's it worth?

We are considering selling our Umbrella Leather to a local business because it is taking up too much of the tank and I was wondering what do you folks think it's worth? It is on a rock that weighs about 4 pounds. We paid $40.00 for it when it was about three inches in diameter and now it is about 14 inches in diameter.

A typical lfs would probably sell that for around $59-65 so you could probably get anywhere between $20 and $30 depending on how much you buy there.

Well,
Based purely on investment, growth, over all visual impact...and being an artist I have to gauge prices of "things" all the time...I would ask a given price, much higher than you expect but within what you know to be reasonable for the buyer.
You paid $40 for a couple inches of animal. You raised it with expensive lights, ultra clean water, speciallied food, unique equipment, mounted on established live rock, and do not forget your time and effort. All of this is an investment.
I personally would ask no less than $225.
It is a wonderful piece, with a strong history of good health and a proven track record of valued growth. It has a a significant impact and would make a fantastic showpiece.
And as it is a buisness that is interested, it is a write off for their taxes.
Maybe I am way off here, but I would consider it a reasonable offer. That way if they counter with an even $200, you are still a winner.
Just an opinion, no yelling please :)

The problem is that you are thinking of selling it to the LFS, which is only interested in turning a fast profit. I would say it is worth at least 100$, I wouldn't even be suprised to see it at 200$ at a LFS, but that's a crazy price, IMO. A LFS would give you a MAX of 75$ for that. As a rule of thumb, LFS give you 1/3 what they will re-sell it for. My advice is to try to find someone who will buy it from you because they want the coral. The person will pay less than at a LFS, and you will make more than if you sold it to the LFS.

Wow!
That's an awsome critter.
I'd say it's worth at least 4 times what you paid for it if not more.
You do need to keep a chunk for yourself though.

If you are indeed selling it(or wanting to) to a lfs,try getting trade/credit.You will get alot more than just outright sellig it to them.My lfs gives me much better deals for trades than selling him the stuff.Just a thought. My leather is getting about that size too,and I have been thinking of fragging it.Only because it is the first coral I had and is still with me to this day.

Did this mean a local FS of a local business. I would suspect someone with the knowledge to grow this beast to that size would be quite familiar with the old "LFS" reference.
If it is a dentist or some other such...their time is money, usually big money. $200-225 is an hour or so for most bigger buisinesses. The time and effort involved with finding, ordering, and the rest of it compared to a walk in, delivered, healthy beast like this one is worth their couple hundred.
Again it must just be me though.

I have the same coral and the same problem. Leather overgrew my tank. I was going to give it to my LFS for $25 credit. I payed $40. It went from 6" across to about 12", but it won't fully open because of crowding. Takes up way too much space.
