What's it worth?

Wow! Thanks everyone! I didn't expect such a response. Andrew79 if you can get leathers that cheap you should start sending them up here to Minnesota. We paid $40.00 for that coral when it was about three inches across and I thought that was a good price. Corals here in Minnesota go for a premium price. I am looking at selling the coral to a local dentist plus it's on a four pound rock so I was hoping to get at least $150.00. By the way live rock goes for an average of $8.00 a pound here in Minnesota. I envy you guys down in Florida.
Neah84 - I live down in Mankato so I do most of my shopping down here so I'm afraid I can't help you out.

Sorry... I would feel bad selling that to someone for over $100 since it is not the least bit rare, leathers can grow extremely fast, and you could buy the exact same thing from most LFS for under $100. Just think about it... how much would you honestly pay for that same coral if you saw one in a store? Not flaming, just letting you know my experience of over 5 years in several fish stores.
edit- If you are wanted to keep the rock then you can just cut the base of the leather off it.

Value of a giving thing is based upon many factors. In this case, it is assumed that in this dentists area the LFS would have a huge leather like this one for sale, it is assumed that the same coral was treated with care, it is assumed that this coral has received some margin of acclimation time.
For the most part, the badge of LFS comes with a serious lack of any real care beyond quick prep for the sale.
In the case of this leather, it has been cared for and comes with a proven track record.
It has real value beyond the actual leather itself. If the dentist is explained what it took to get the leather to that stage, then he can make a counter offer.
A couple hundred is not a huge amount and the leather itself is quite huge.
I say make an offer.
Good luck with your sale.

Cicnyreefer, I don't want to stiff anyone on the sale of this coral and the whole idea is to sell it intact (rock included) so that others can enjoy it without the coral having to go through a cutting. Also as I have stated, corals in Minnesota (remember we are no where near an ocean) go for a premium price! If I had a larger tank and saw this coral on a 4 lb. rock in my LFS I would think $150.00 to $200.00 would be a pretty good price since the same coral at 3 inches would be $40.00. Also the buyer would have my personal guarantee that this coral would thrive in his tank or he would receive a 100% return on his money. See if you can get that at your LFS.
JawfishRay, to my wife and I, in Minnesota, this is a show coral and that is why she does not want to cut it up. I also would like to walk into the dentist office and see this coral growing and happy a couple of years from now. i will keep track of it as my own and will offer any assistance I can to keep it healthy for as many years as I can. Sometimes it's cool to hack up a coral and make little ones out of it and sometimes it's cool to just let them grow and see how big and beautiful they can get.
