I just got this little guy.. he is about an inch and a half long. What foods should I feed him, and what is the name of the supplements I need to put on his food to prevent HLLE? I tried asking my LFS about the supplements and they didnt have a clue what I was talking about.. Plz give the brand name on the supplements... :D

i think the best you could do is make alot of variety in his diet the more the better. i have a purple that loves brine, plankton, flake, marine cuisine, formula one and two and i also use seedweed selects and from time to time romaine lettuce. i also soak all my food in zoe i think its made by kent its a vitamin supplement.

Also, how long did it take for you guys' yellow tangs to start eating their varied diet? So far i've tried feeding formula 1, bloodworms, and seaweed selects. He hasn't touched any of these foods. The only thing I've seen it eat so far is the algae off the LR.

How long have you had it? Maybe it's getting used to your tank. I'd keep feeding variety. I don't know if you are using a veggie clip or not for the seaweed selects but I just float mine and the tang goes after it. Just an idea. HTH

Hey all!
I have a yellow tang that was iffy at best for the first couple of weeks. I'm not sure if he would have gotten over it once he got used to the tank... I started soaking my formula 1 and 2 in garlic elixor and he'd meet me at the top with the rest of the guys to fight for it! Still does! I also feed mysis shrimp and nori (seaweed paper) as treats. I haven't tried lettuce or spinach; but, heard they like that too. <smile>

Mine ate 10 minutes after he was acclimated! I feed him an algae, shrimp and krill frozen mix. I thaw it in a little warm water and put a little in at a time. He is a great eater.

Mine ate only alge off the LR for the first 2 days.. then is started to eat anything else I put in there.. my Hippo tang was pretty much the same way.. although the Hippo was a very shy one when I it.. was very easily freaked out into hiding under a rock.. hehe... well he thought because his eyes were under the rock he was hiding.. But my tangs are my best buds now when its feeding time.. ;)

Keep seaweed selects or nori available at all times. Live shrimp soaked in selcon will also do it. After eating well can also switch live brine for frozen . Always soak everything in selcon...always. That's the secret to success. Good luck.

Selcon is not really made by any big company. Sometimes it is hard to come by. It is about 12.99 and like a pink color. There are several places to order it on line. I use it every day.

I feed my yellow tang and blue hippo a variety as well, brine shrimp, plankton formula 1&2 , but i always feed along with garlic xtreme , the stuff really smells but they love it !!!! sometimes i think they never stop eating . I also use a veggie clip with seaweed select and they seem to always munch on that throughout the day ... hth

Selcon is heavy concentrated vitamin C liquid wehich helps keep fish healthy through great nutirition. I have had no problems getting it at any LFS which stocks S/W fish. Also available through mail order, internet sites, etc.

generally tangs like leafy foods, and algae, i feed mine nori from the asian food store. they also like the frozen brine. i've learned however that romain has no nutritional value for fish, same with iceberg lettuce. spinach, greenleaf and redleaf lettuce are good, as well as brocolli, however, these greens should be frozen before using them to feed. this breaks down the cellulose in the leaves that fishes' digestive systems have a tough time with.
