Well, this thread is not exactly rocket science. Of course all of the homers (including me) will choose their own city. But that's ok.
Detroit definitely has the greatest body of work in this field. Let me go over some of our stats:
Pistons - 3 nba championships, 5 trips to the finals, 10 trips to the eastern conference finals.
Red Wings - 3 championships, in the playoffs every year, countless trips to the finals and conference finals
Tigers - Coming off a trip to the World Series and now possibly with one of the best offenses in history... dare I say championship in 2007??
Lions - nevermind

University of Michigan - National Championship in Football, NCAA basketball championship, oodles of Rose Bowls, perrenial powerhouse
Michigan State University - NCAA basketball championship, 5 or 6 Final fours (don't remember), another perrenial powerhouse.
Beat that...

Detroit's got 9 major championships in the last 20 years and has team going deep in the playoffs almost every year. Can any other city make that claim?

I can't argue with MJ and the Bulls... but that's a one hit wonder (White Sox aside).

Just an update I just heard. Tigers win tonight, Cleveland loses, Tigers now have sole possession of first place in the AL Central, (toughest division in baseball). One game lead.

don't Detroit fans riot, burn, and kill whenever their teams win something? if so, I'd say it's hard to say they're a "great sports town", because good fans don't riot. also, U of Michigan and Michigan State aren't in Detroit are they? I know for sure that one of them is Ann Arbor, no idea on the other one.
I would put Chicago high up there with all the Bulls wins, the White Sox win, and the Bears going 1/2 in Superbowls since 1986. and also for the Cubs being the lovable losers of baseball.
being an Atlanta Braves, I'm proud of the 14 divisions. but Braves fans are generally non-supportive. Hawks basketball and Falcons football is mediocre. but, Georgia Tech won a football (and I believe baseball) national championship in the past 20 years, and they are in Atlanta.
just from a college standpoint, Gainsville would have to be high up since the Gators have won 2 straight basketball championships and a football championship.

When all else fails, pull the tired, stereotypical "riot" card. Actually we did not riot for any of these championships, nor for the Superbowl in Detroit, Baseball's all-star game or any of the other multitude of great events.
I include U of M and MSU in this discussion because Detroit has come to describe the metro area. Same as if LA wanted to claim USC's football championships in the discussion.

what's "stereotypical" about saying that? I remember a few towns rioting after the hometown team won a championship and if I remember, they were LA and Detroit. I'll give Detroit fans credit for supporting their teams, particularly the god awful Lions. but good fans don't riot and make fools out of themselves and their cities.

Pontius lived here in ATL for 7 yrs, although I love the sports the fans are what sets it back. You go to a sporting event and 50%+ are pulling for the visiting team that is a bad sports town. (Unless its a dawgs game). Detroit has pulled for their teams at the worst of times.

There hasn't been a riot since 84 when the tigers won. Since then you had 3 Pistons champs. 4 Red Wings champs, 1 Natl Champ Mich Football, 1 Natl Champ MSU basketball. Where were the riots then????? There wasn't.

I SAID that Atlanta does not have great fans and that's a set back. also, the "dawgs" play in Athens, the yellow jackets play in Atlanta.

Everyone considers the dawgs as Atlanta even if they play an hr outside. The pistons play further away from detroit then the dawgs do from atl
