let me ask, what is the actual "criteria" for the original question, "best sports town"? is it number of championships won, fan support, classy fans, classy town, or what?
if it's all things, yeah, Detroit has won a lot of championships and has good fan support. but they are not known to have the classiest fans and the city has a reputation of being a dump, even by big city standards. and I still don't give you credit for the 2 colleges because they aren't in Detroit.
Chicago is hard to argue with. they win, they have

[hr]
fans who I would say are a *little* more classy than Detroit fans.
I could even give votes for teams that DON'T win a lot. I'd give credit to Cleveland fans because they give major support, but they don't win and they're known to show their butts as well. same with Philadelphia.
I wouldn't give votes to LA or NY because it's only natural sports would be popular there because they are 2 of the biggest cities in the world.
off the top of my head, I'd probably put Chicago and Detroit as the top 2. though I'd give A LOT of points to Green Bay for the simple fact that their football team is owned by the people and they are

[hr]
. Minnesota is also up there, though they don't win a lot of championships, they are pretty consistent.

Guess I should update the profile. Not in Montana any more and not from Montana, just lucky enough to have lived there for 13 years.
But even a Montana lifer would have sense enough to know Detroit is an old Indian word meaning 2nd rate sports teams

my team (South Carolina) is an SEC school that plays UGA in all sports, and I've never heard anyone before you call them an Atlanta team. GT is Atlanta, UGA is Athens.

What is your definition of classy? And why would Chicago fans have more class? I guarantee there is more money in Detroit than Chicago? Last I checked we don't throw batteries at players like philly. What? we throw beers at thugs like Artest? He deserves it.

Actually Detroit is french for straight. Meaning the river, pronounced Day-Twa. Little Fact for ya.

who said "class" has anything to do with money? Chicago fans are not known for violence, Detroit fans are. Artest deserved to have beer thrown at him? why? he was wrong for going in the stands, but that was AFTER the beer was thrown at him. in general, Detroit has a reputation of being possibly the most dangerous and crime ridden city in the US. per capita, the violent crime rate of Detroit is more than triple the national average. that's not necessarily the sports teams' fault, but it also doesn't help either.
like I said, I give Detroit credit for winning and having supportive fans. I don't give them credit for being "good" fans or being a "good" city. btw, regarding Philly fans, I said they are

[hr]
, not "good". I'd say that Philly fans are possibly the worst fans in all of sports.

Next time you check the Atlanta Journal Constitution see who dominates the pages. If it isn't Vicks dog fighting it UGA

Anyone who beats their wive should have a beer dumped on them.
Worst Fans
#1 Chicago Cubs Fans
# 2 Boston Red Sox Fans
#3 Any Philly Team
See the pattern here? They are losers.

I very rarely check the AJC, but I don't doubt that. that still doesn't mean UGA is an Atlanta team or considered by anyone to be an Atlanta team, they just have more overall fan support than GT, and therefore more press coverage. go on UGA's Scout board and ask their fans if they consider UGA to be from Athens or Atlanta.

Cubs fans may be bandwagon fans, but I wouldn't say they are the "worst" fans. I also wouldn't say that Red Sox fans are the second worse, though I'm sure they're pretty obnoxious. I def agree that Philly fans are the worst. but I'd still say Detroit fans are the second worse (possibly 3rd behind Cleveland) if you take NY and LA out of the equation.
imo, a fanbase can be very supportive but still be *bad* fans. and I don't agree that fans should involve themselves in the game the way that did vs Artest. though I fully agree that Artest is a punk, I watch sports for the sports, not for the fans who try to make themselves a part of the game.
basically what I'm saying, you can be high on the 'good' list, but also high on the 'bad' list. Detroit has a lot of good and a lot of bad.
the more I think about it, Minnesota would be way up there in my book. because they are very supportive fans that don't have any kind of bad reputations. so they'd be high on the 'good' list and low on the 'bad' list.

PS I'll vote for Boston or San Antonio here. Boston four championships in the past six years and San Antonio has four champs in the past 10 with only one pro sports team.

I think that the quality of a "sports town" has to do with just the results on the field. However, if we bring in the side issues, ie. fans, venues, then I'd still give the nod to Detroit. 3 new stadiums, arenas and excellent fans.
LA is a good sports city but the fans don't seem to be passionate about it. NY has no good sports team besides the Yankees and they have basically two teams for every sport. I don't buy the loveable losers of Cleveland and the Cubs. Chicago is probably the 2nd best sports town in the country.
On the Artest thing, who cares if he got a beer thrown at him. Happens all the time in many different sports venues. Personally, if I wouldn't get banned for life, I'd love to hit him with a beer during a game (or just a cup full of rocks).

I tacked this on to my last post....

so for me, the criteria are:
*winning tradition
*fan support
*how decent the fans act (where being "good" fans come in)
*the city itself

Chicago Cubs fans are the most obnoxious fans I have ever came across, and for what? They have not done anything in 100 yrs. Boston fans are as bad. How can you take NY or LA out of the equation? If the fans would have been smarter they would have taken Artest and Jackson out that night. They are thugs.

Agreed, they die hard for their teams.

Ever hear of the Vikings hooker cruise? Also, the team about to lose Garnett has to cost them some points.

because it's only natural that NY and LA would be very popular sports towns because they are so large and the owners are so rich that they are able to buy the most popular players. but if you want to add them to the list, I'd say NY and LA fans are 2nd and 3rd behind Philly and maybe equal to Detroit fans. though NY fans are just arrogant and pompous acting (like new yorkers in general) they really don't have any violent history surrounding sports teams.

By the way Pontius that is the best avatar I have ever seen. Hard to get mad at you when I look at that.
