Ok, everyone agrees that patience and research are the big ones? What is the biggest mistake you personally have made your self?
1. I bought shrimp from the grocery store and chopped it up and fed it to the tank. Within 24 hours I had 4 dead fish.
2. Bought a fish and invert I thought I had to have that day with out researching them first. (Yes, I did it twice) Still have them but it limits waht I can do with the tank. I do not have the heart to take them back to the lfs.

it wasnt me but my friend and i were talking on the phone and he was fooling around with his lighting.then he put the phone down to do something and he knocked the phone in the tank and his fish got some electric shock therapy.then as stupid as he is he put his hand in after and got shocked.

The most common mistake that most would never think of is 'meddling'. The last thing a fish store rep will tell you is to leave your tank alone. Too often people get sucked in to buying useless stuff, constantly redecorate, add/remove things, or simply just eat, sleep, and breath in their tank. Follow what most people say and be patient. If you're gonna do reef, find and research the most natural, low-maintenance system you can find and the rest will take care of itself. Just like in nature, changing conditions will screw up everything.

i think they have all been mentioned, but one that i made in my earlier days was putting a grouper in my 75 gal. not smart. lesson learned is that an over bioloaded tank is a disaster waiting to happen. keep the tank stocked on the lighter side of things, you will be happier in the long run.

go ahead. don't do water changes/tests for several mos. and then add a new fish :) find him dead several days later <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> not remove him for several more days  then watch the rest of your fish die <img src="graemlins//freak.gif" border="0" alt="[freak]" /> <img src="graemlins//bah.gif" border="0" alt="[bah]" /> <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" /> and then, only then, realize the error of your ways on the basic stuff such as water changes.
