I'd like to know what you guys think is the most important issue to pay attention to to keep a successful reef. Aside from patience.

(money - screw the utility bill).. ha...

you just pay general attention to your water - make sure it has good flow, no bad checmicals, SG, temperature ..... if I look into either one of my tanks I notice something not looking right I check water quality first!

Overanalyzer - If you look at my tank - I have a hang on filter, which I'm not sure I should have on there. A power head - large one and a skimmer. I think I need another power head?
You also commented earlier on not using a skimmer for the cycle time I'm having right now?
I'm learning, so any help is very much appreciated.
What happened to Bob? :)

I'd also say water quality.......but more important is the fresh water you add. It your not using fresh PURE water that'squal to water frr a GOOD RODI unit they your off to a bad start

first - skimmer during cycle removes the beneficial bacteria that helps your tank cycle - though I do not know if that is true or false - I just never run a skimmer during my cycle ....
you will most likely need some more water movement - though you have a good start already. A power head to move water along behind your rock work and another up front maybe?
I use a HOB filter in my 20 and since my 140 has a sump and refugium I do not mess with a HOB there - but I have one and space to use it in my sump. Good place to run carbon or other filetr material. I'd keep it if I were you!

Running your skimmer during the cycle will not hurt anything. I don't know if it will make the cycle go any quicker, but it won't slow it down. Good luck.

Their is no 1 thing.
What is the most important to bake a cake? Eggs, flour, heat, a pan, oil........ With out any 1 of them you are headed for FAILURE!
You need lights and good water and food and filters and corals of coarse.
DO NOT THINK YOU CAN PAY ATTENTION TO ONE AND SKIMP ON ALL THE OTHERS. It will not work.
(is this a contest, did I get it right?)LOL :D

Knowledge---of at least the basics before you start. Its too hard to narrow down, so I think general knowledge is the key and then build from there. Think about it---its general knowledge that lets you understand water parameters, and all other things mentioned here. :D
