The only way I've heard of vodka being used is as a painless way to euthanize a fish after making it fall asleep with clove oil. There are many who are more experienced with fish than I, but this is all I've heard.

The vodka is for you to drink while watching your tank. Of course it could be a new cure that we have searching for to cure the evil ich........may kill the fish too.....oh well, they were going to die from it anyway. Lesley

I perfer the flush method myself....then you can pretend that you are sending Nemo to that big sea grave! At least that is what you can tell the little kids.

flushing is an extremly cruel way to euthanize fish.
vodka is used as a dose by (highly) expirienced aquarists to boost bacterial breakdown of nitrate, theres a chemical in the vodka which promotes the bacteria that gets rid of Nitrates by reducing the oxygen content. I personnally dont like this method, its too dangerous. very easyto kill fish, and throw your entire tank out of whack.

Vodka or Sugar can be used to feed and promote beneficial denitrating bacteria in a denitrator reactor.

agreed. I asked the same question long ago after reading about this online. Definately not something for the beginner hobbyist to try. Water changes are the safest and best way to reduce nitrates. I f you have a refugium you can just add more chaeto algae and a dsb.

Very good explanation, reefkprZ. The whole vodka craze just picked back up not too long ago because a lot of reefers in Europe are going back to it. I saw a magnificent SPS tank by a guy in Germany and the vodka method is what he uses to keep the tank clean. He showed growth photos of his SPS corals and it was incredible.
Me personally, I would rather stick with my water changes and know that I am not doing anything that could potentially wipe out my whole tank.
