My guess is a looks to me like "Plate Algae", it can be a nuisance if let go too far. As to how to rid a tank of it. I do not know. short of removing the rock. I have been trying to rid a few spots of it for the last year.

Does that lay on the rock cause mine is like a piece of paper and is only atached by about 1in to a peice of branch rock.If it is stuck to the rock that is not it.

Ditch it before it starts to spread more than you want it or place the rock somewhere where you can control the growth. It appears to be growing very fast.

I do not know the scientific name for that algae. However, I can tell you from experience that you probably do not want that in your tank. In my tank, it started out as a spot just like yours. You can generally peel the growth off of the rock. However, if it gets on rocks with lots of crevices, then you end up having to scrub it off. As time went on, the stuff just kept growing faster and faster. Then, I started getting the same type of brown macro-algae (thin, brown, opaque), but it grew in a leafy form instead of just encrusting the rocks. Pretty soon, I was harvesting the stuff by the handful during water changes.
Ultimately, I ended up getting a Naso Tang and it scoured the tank clean in a couple of months. (I will end up getting a larger tang for the Naso as it grows) I am now raising macroalgae in another tank to feed the tang.

Ok will take the rock out and peal it off.I don't want anything that will become a problem in my tank. What make it grow?I have no trates in my tank.Does it just feed off light?

I don't know what caused it to grow. I would have said phosphates and nitrates just like any algae. You say you don't have any nitrates. However, you may not have nitrates because things like this in your tank are absorbing them.
I do recall that when I first got my life rock, I had some "plates" like that which were growing out like elephant ears off of some of the rocks. I thought to myself that it was cool because it was "ocean" life and natural. I later came to regret that because I think the problems were related. The "ears" on the rocks looked exactly like this encrusting stuff except it was only attached at a small place on the rock.
I wondered whether mine was helped by the lighting. Since I got the metal halide lights, the stuff doesn't seem to grown back. However, I also have the tang. So, I don't know whether it is the tang eating it as fast as it pops up or whether the more intense lighting has also helped.
I have heard that brown algae is promoted by low light.

I also have MH's.I have a tang he muches on the rock nonstop but will not touch that at all.I pulled it off and to my amaze all that came out of 3 shoots the size of a star polyp tube.It felt like a plant but slimmy.I don't have a problem with any reading since I only have 4 fish and they are tiny one and I only feed 2 to 3 times a week, and I run magnum 350 and wet/dry and I run carbon 24/7.Once a month I will throw some phosphate sponge in it for the heck of it.

When I was trying to get rid of it, I tested for nitrates and phosphates too. I reduced feeding to once a week. It didn't seem to have any impact on that stuff. Whatever it absorbs, it was finding enough in the tank to make it happy even without my feeding the tank. The best thing to do is just keep it from getting a foot hold.
