+1 Lion, lately I've only been shopping at wholesalers. It was tough to get some of them to allow walk in hours but when you're spending a few hundred dollars it's also hard for them to say no!

In talking with the owner of one last week he mentioned supplying a lot of local fish stores but he also mentioned a few of them buying certain items direct from the source (indo, bali, etc.) He mentioned one of the things he sees LFS's buying direct a lot is inverts. Seems to make shipping worth while you have to place a thousand dollar order from the source so many are going in together and buying in bulk. It was a pretty interesting conversation really.
As for SWF prices, some of the things I bought direct from the wholesalers were very comparible to prices on here. It's just easier for me to drive and pick up what I need.

I've ALWAYS been able to find the same price locally as online. that usually isn't the problem. even if its a little higher after shipping its always cheaper and I can actually see what I'm buying. online is great for finding specimens your LFS isn't stocking. there's a lot of stuff regularly stocked online I hardly or never see in a LFS.

So where else is there to get livestock for fish stores other then whole salers? Some times you can buy direct from the source but alot of times it is illegal and very risky if you are going to get healthy animals

it seemed that you meant there was only one place in CA to find fish wholesale. there are a few in that state as well as others in other states, especially FL.

Oh, I meant whole salers are pretty mcuh the only place to get livestock other then going straight to the source but then you run into problems. Cause the guy that started the thread said he gets cheaper prices from a store that gets stuff from whole salers.

I think the OP is maybe just looking at a couple specific examples. Sure, it's nearly impossible for a store to be cheaper on everything. Everybody pays different for fish, so some things are going to be cheaper here, and a couple things might be more expensive here. Look at the Goldflake angel $275 (all be it on sale so $299 regularly IIRC?). It's a $350 fish elsewhere.

MaTT B - How are the prices at the LFS's in the Columbus area? I recently graduated from OSU and could only ever find 2 places where the quality matched the price - one place went out a few years back, and the other is a really neat place with some of the best quality I've ever found (you pay for it tho) Since I moved to Cincy I have not been able to find anywhere that rivals that place. everything down here is crazy expensive for what you get.
As for the topic at hand - I too have found the shipping prices to be crazy. the last order that I placed was around $100 in livestock, but turned into around $150 - $175 when it was all said and done. Still cheaper than LFSs around here. I bet in Cali and Fla you can find some good prices with wholesalers and probably even LFSs

There are a few nice places. There is aquarium adventrue which is way over priced. Jacks aquarium and pets which has OK fish. Phishy business that has some of everything. And then reef systems which is a one of a kind place. He sells fish some times but mostly aquacultured corals that he growns in the green house. Here is the website. It is not updated often though.http://reefsystems.com

I never liked aquarium adventure - High priced and low quality, Jacks was not too bad but now they are starting to sky rocket prices. I actually shopped with the owner of phishy business when he was still working out of his basement. That 400+ gal tank that he has in the back was amazing the last time that I was up there. I never got the chance to visit reef systems - poor college kid = could not afford any more than frags.

I guess I missed out. I'll have to check it out the next time I am up that way. It's only an hours drive or so - Maybe I can convince the gf to take a road trip. I'd probably have to promise her a trip to easton tho.
