I look back now after starting my reef 2 months ago and it is amazing how my lfs had steered me so wrong, so many times! From adding multiple tangs into a 75 gal, to medicating with the wrong stuff, to doing to many fish at once and on and on.
They are actually the most reputable lfs in my area. What the heck is wrong with these people(even the owner) theyve been in buisness since the 70s and I know they know everything about sw tanks, so why so much bad advice??????? I know sick and dead fish will make them more money in the short run, but it will also turn people away from the hobby(not me of course)
WTF???

Kinda messed up huh?
One store by me sold me a condy anenome telling me they great for any tank.
When I returned home I decided to look this bad boy up and no one likes them. Kinda weird for them to recomend it to me.
Its ok, that is one IKE took!!!

I think i know what store your talkin about... starts with an N huh! I live in Malabar and there is a store in Palm bay and the guys there are awesome. If i have the store wrong I apologize but the "N" store did me wrong once and ill never go back cause of it. if youd like some info on the lfs i go to id be more than happy to give you info!

ha, no...but I did go in and do that the other day. You should have seen what they were telling me!
Oh, yeah and the four fish that they had were carrying ich and I asked the guy about it (who runs the sw department) and he said they were gonna treat the ich and then start putting more fish in. He had no idea that the ich stays in there for a month after no fish! Poor creatures.

From my experience, unless run by true hobbyists, all LFS think about is in this equation LFS=$$$... I usually gather the reputability of certain fish stores by asking them questions about the hobby they should know ( usually good husbandry practices, acclimation etc..) For example, I asked my nearest LFS if they sold RO/DI water, they replied with they dont even know what the heck it was, next, I asked if they used a sump for their system, again, no clue, lastly, I asked what they thought about the use of macroalgae in a refugium, and they also had no clue what a refugium was, never mind chaeto... Lets just say I'd never shop there EVER.....

I must admit I agree with you! No matter who you talk to everyone has a different opinion. Last weekend a new LFS bagged my inverts in fish tank water not invert water. My inverts died in the bag. They medicate all fish tanks so they didn't have a chance. My suggestion is find a person that you can really trust. It will take trial and error.

well thats the wierd part...they are true hobbyists in most respects. They sell their own RO water, the have fuges on all their tanks, they have some awesome dt's. They just give really bad advise! Its messed up

yes trident is my store. they are great, they treat me like my tank is the most important tank in the world. I hope you can keep going there. stay away from the N.

spiny,
yeah and trident has some really exotic corals and fish...some truly amazing stuff. But just so you know...N has much better prices on all of the accesories(pumps, food, test kits, skimmers, etc...) But you have to know what you want-dont frieken ask them any questions!
Yeah, I hate when the fw guys try and put their input in!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna tell them...go back to the swamp

Yeah, I had one guy at petsmart tell me all the sw tanks he's done had undergravel filters and I called him out on it and asked "Oh really, how many sw tanks have YOU actually setup?" "None." "That's what I thought.." He walked off... death to undergravel filters!!!!

The LFS business is a sad one because there are so many people who are gravely uninformed. Yet, these same person are trusted to help customers make very important decisions with their aquariums.

i sure remember starting up 15 years or so ago.the lfs selling me fish like longnose butterfly fish right away.luckily they went out of business.i now live in fort worth and work in construction so i travel .i found a lfs in dallas about 40 miles from here .the owner has a degree in marine biology.she was by far the most knowlagable owner i have ever met.test your water as soon as you walked in the door, wouldnt sell you a thing if the water wasnt up to par, would not sell you a clam if your lights were not bright eneough.not pushy at all.sometime had to wait for an hour just to talk to her and it was worth the wait.well her trusy also knowlagable employee caught skin cancer.so he started missing days and she couldnt find a new helper she could trust to watch the store when she was out maintaining tanks.now i cannot find her anywhere.that is why i found this forum for some help.
i did find a nice lfs here in fort worth .just two weeks age they have some awesome display tanks a scorpion fish the size if my fist.no ich on any fish .but talking to some of the kids there so far i prefer this forum for advice.
so if you have a great lfs in your area lucky you im jelious

what rot disease?
someone said it above. stores are to make money. no one opens a store because they want to help out fellow reefers. they open a store because they think there is money to be made doing something you love- it's kind of like a nymphomaniac getting a job as a ---- star. the trouble is, the tiny bit of money coming in is used up quickly by the bills, and then they panic. they start hiring cheaper, high school kids to save money and instruct them to push sales.
you really can't blame them. it's either hire these young kids and save a few bucks or go out of business. anyone would do it to save their store. shame on the newb who waltzes in and actually takes advice from some pimple faced student who studders (i was one of them)
