When ammonia spikes

What are the pramaters when ammonia spikes

or better yet, what should my ammonia be when it spikes. The highest my ammonia has gotten is .25

i would have to guess and say that the ammonia levels go up

but seriously, your ammonia goes up when it spikes... typically it should stay at 0

Top end ammonia is considered 1.0 it can definitely get higher but shouldn't be allowed. Use water changes to control top end level.
