i couldn't imagine being in a spot like that..i agree with many of the above though, when a dog cant take care of itself, or its in pain to just walk up stairs and what not..its time. i had my brittany spaniel zach for 15 yrs..my family bought him when i was one month old. that dog was TOUGH, he got attacked by my neighbors pitbull 4-5 times..right in the throat..and he stood his own, hell he even went for the pitbull once and took it down when it cornered my mom! he was a tough hunting dog..when he was 15 i came home and found him on the stairs whining because he couldnt make it up them on his own..was the hardest thing i ever had to do at the time in my life was take him to my parents and then to the vet..it just broke one year with my dog pickles" long haired miniature dachshund" and it kills me to think of the day i will have to do this..thankfully dachshunds usually live healthy to 14-15 yrs if taken care of well.goodluck to you! hope he can hang in there for quite some time still.my fiance has had to have her german shephard and st bernard put down..they are great dogs.

Well we put our 6 year old lab down about a year ago. She was a resuced dog. One day we notice a lump on her side about the size of a large marble. We thought that it was just a lump from her playing with the other dogs. Sometimes they play alittle rough. Well in one weeks time that lump went from marble to golf ball. We went to the vets and got the bad news. x-rays showed that the mass had eated 2 ribs and was pushing 2 more outwards. Surgery was going to be around 7k with no guarantee that she would not get another one. So we called my cousion in New York who is board certf. He said that he has only had 2 case like this one. One had the surgery but got another mass in less than 6 months. They ended up putting her down. So instead of letting her way of life decrease we put her down. Toughest thing I ever done.
like a little kid. But I know that was the right thing to do. Well still miss her today. Good luck on your journey.

I just put my golden retriever mix down last week.He was almost 16yr old.
He started not eating then was losing weight and not moving around much.So I desided it was time to do it.It was hard to do since I had him since I was 18yrs old.He had a spoiled life though.

Sorry for your loss. You must have been a great 'owner'....16years for a 'Golden' is way ahead of the curve!

I don't have any kid but I treat them as they are my kids. They get what ever they need to stay happy and healthy.I went and got him some chicken finger from a restaurant and some other junk food for his last dinner and he loved it.
