Since he started with live rock, it already has that beneficial bacteria on it, it also has hitch-hikers such as feather dusters, peanut worms and who knows what else, skimming will give these critters a better chance for survivability. Your nitrifying becteria is on the surface areas in your tank, not in the water column. It's true, your ammonia is in the water and if he had started with base rock, then I would advise no skimmer til the end of the cycle, but since starting with LR, it's a nother ball game.
