When can I put in a clean up crew. I have a tank that is cycling and am getting ready to add 50 lbs live rock. When can I put in some shrimp or a snail for the kids to watch. It is still a VERY young tank

You can start with a decent size crew right through the cycle. Avoid any stars (brittles, etc) as they will drop most of their legs. I would get a dozen blues (the reds are too expensive to put in a young tank) and a dozen snails and 2-3 emerald crabs. Maybe even a sally lightfoot (not sure how hardy they are in an early tank). Shrimp Im not sure about and they can be pricy, but snails, crabs and hermits should be fine. Maybe get your first crew at your LFS for $30 bucks rather that drop $100 from here. Then after a couple months, get a full crew with shrimp and stars. Good Luck!

I would wait until AFTER you add the LR and cycling finishes to add any inverts. the reason why is your LR no matter how perfect your water conditions are now, will spike your Ammonia and then your nitrites and then your nitrates. even though hermits and snails are pretty hardy most inverts in those kind of conditions will keel over. no matter if its $10 or $100 you're you are taking a chance that might cost you in the end
