When treating Ick with hypo...

How long is it before you usually see all the ick cysts go away? While I am VERY happy that I have recued my BH Tang (and feel quite accomplished
) she still has a few ick spots on her after 6 days in hypo. Is this normal?

What are you using to measure the salinity? Is this six days of full hypo or six days since you started?
The spots are usually gone in about a week from when the SG reached 1.009, assuming that the SG was not allowed to creep back up. You have to test every day. Twice a day is better.

I honestly can't remember but I think It is 4 full days of hypo now. I ordered a refractometer online. I have been testing the SG daily, and it has been at 1.009 the last 3-4 days I have tested it. Initially Dory had like 1K ick spots and was laying on the bottom near death. Now she has almost completely healed, is swimming around great and eating well. She just has maybe 4-5 spots left on her. I was just wondering when I should expect them to all be gone.

If it has been at least 4-5 days then they should be gone within the next couple of days. I am glad to hear that she is doing better!

I thought so, I was just asking the experts. I feel like I won a major battle here, LOL.

i am also happy to hear that your fish is doing much better, even though not completely healthy its a big improvement.

Remember that the absence of spots does not mean you have cured ick you can still transmit it to your DT I am sure Sir Q the shark was going to tell you that

The OP is doing a full hypo. And yes, you are correct

Ha, I know. I was just wondering when ALL the spots would go away. That makes me feel even better about making progress.

Also Ick is already in my DT. I took the fish out of the DT and put them in QT tanks and am going to leave the DT empty of fish for 6 weeks.

Just a little update...The day after I posted this thread when I arrived home there were no spots on the tang and there have not been any spots show up on anyone since the 8th. All of the fish are very active and eating great.

One more ? though, how often would you guys recommend doing a water change on the QT tanks in hypo?
Keep an eye on the nitrates. If they are not high, and there is no ammonia nor nitrite, then you don't have to do any. They are only in there for six weeks. If you do a water change then just match the SG, PH, and temp to that of the QT.

I did a water change today just to be safe. Readings were 0-0-40 on one and 0-0-20 on the other so I went ahead and did a change on both tanks. I already had 30G of 1.009 buffered water waiting so it was quick and simple. I took your advice on having the water ready.

Yeah, the nitrates at 40 is getting up there. You made a great decision

I usually do a water change every couple days, but that's because I am vacuuming out any uneaten food.
Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite too. I lost a fish during hypo because of an ammonia spike, and have almost lost another.
