:notsure:
I don't think I understand. Which water has amm. and trites? The tank? The change water? You should never have amm. or trites over 0 once your cycle is complete. And your change water should also be free of these.
What am I missing?

Ahhh I use RO filtered water. You can go to a grocery store and get RO/DI water from the U-fill it water container. OR you can buy it from teh LFS (around $0.35 to $0.45 around here).
I would not use tap water. Too many uncontrollable elements in tap water (as well as toxic elements that can't be totally filtered out with your tank's filtration - tin, copper, iron, chlorine, chloramine, etc.)
If nothing else there is a tap water purifier that will help reomve some of the harmful elements.

Ahhh! You mean your tap water?
Your tap should not have amm. or trites. Municipal water is sometimes treated with chloramine, which can show up on a test as amm, though. I briefly used tap water in my old 55 and treated it for chlorine and chloramine (Aquasafe, I think). However, for my current set-up, I use only purchased RO (or distilled if I can't find RO).

The sand will settle on it's own, may just need more time. And definately consider using RO water, especially in such a small system. Even if you have to buy it, it's very inexpensive.

oh ok well where do u get the water from in the store?

Lots of them now have setups where you bring in your own containers. We even have them way up here now. Look for the "drinking water" section in a grocery store in there are no pet/fish stores close

Something like that

I'm sure you guys have them down there, because of the high salt content your drinking/tap water already has.
Get on the phone and call around )) beats looking stupid carrying water jugs around.
