live ones look like dead ones only with a thick fur of brownish. they need a Large sandbed and u might not even see them. this is my knowledge but im no expert. hope i can help. i would personaly stay away because they need lareg areas of LIVE sand. so research further and see if they are worth it

I have not heard of sand dollars being successfully being kept in an aquarium....ever. They need a LOT of live sand to survive as they feed on microplankton and bacteria in the sand.
Leave them in the ocean.

pretty funny
but i do it for only $1.99 gas fee
. but really, i think its illegal to have more than 2???? something like that i live down here in florida and the beaches have signs that tell about all that kind of stuff( if its legal or illegal, how many of whatever that you can posses.) i read it but it was about 4 years ago now. im sure that they do need a large sand bed to survive though, and you might want to check into that legallity thing if your serious about one.

Sand dollars can not live in captivity. If you buy one, it WILL die. They need sandbed depths measured in feet, not inches.

my daughter see 100's of them on the sandbar by the condo we stay in. (along with our little sting ray friends)
and it would seem they would need lots of sand and food source as stated. Plus you don't know what they have on them. I would not want that in my tank.

As noted, their survival rate long term is very poor...and if healthy you shouldn't see them (live or die). They need a VERY deep sand bed, VERY particular particle size and some even need calcareous versus silicious substrate!

OK, OK, You all convinced me to not get a sand dollar for my tank. I think I will just get a dead one that has been bleached white just for the look. When I add it to my tank, do I need to soak it in anything or just do a basic cleaning? Will it increase my calcium levels?
Thanks everyone for your opinion :joy:

It will just get overgrown with algae... nothing stays white for very long in a marine tank.
