Where does live rock come from?

I was just wondering if anyone knows if the rock we use in our tanks is stuff they get off the ocean floor that has been broken off in a storm. Or if they break off pieces to ship in??

can't answer your question directly, but some sites offer rock that was "seeded" and then harvested some time later. This was our preference when we bought rock, felt it was more environmentally friendly.

supposedly the only natural live rock you can buy has to already be in fragments. there are aquacultured rocks that start out as fragments and end up live. they aren't supposed to tear the reefs down but different areas of the world have different laws governing the practice. from what my research has found. ;)

I know some comes from storms, some are cultivated from selected dead pieces and put in basket an set at bottom of acean for period of time. And im sure some is broken off.

it comes from all over; mostly FIGI rock or gulf rock seems to be making big appearance now; some retailers may make thier own even by seding base rock on site w/ LR that if cared for correctly, seeds the base rock; walt smith seems to be the #1 LR vendor though; have noticed that most LFS around here stock their LR from W.S.
