Where should I drill holes?

I just got a small maybe 25 gallon jebo curved glass tank. Very nice. Ive determined its not tempered. Im thinking drilling holes in the back rather than the bottom is better. 1. If the hole ever leaked it would not drain the entire tank. 2. I wont have large pvc pipe coming up through the tank. My idea was to simply attach a pvc inlet near one side of the top back of the tank. the outlet on the other side. Is this the best idea?

You know that you can't just use any drill bit for this task, right? It would be smarter to go through the bottom and add some overflow boxes around the standpipes.

Why would it be smarter to add a box? Im not trying to create a trickle filter. I simply want the water to flow to my sump. I dont see why I need a box. Please explain.
