where is the preferred place to drill holes in a 75 gallon tank? up high in the middle or down low? any advice would be great

I going to assume you mean for your drain to the sump. I would drill it up top in the tank....I would never drill a drain down low in the DT for the mere fact if the power would go out the tank would drain to that point where the bulkhead is.....I'd stay at least 1.5" from the edges......

if you are asking where to drill the holes for the overflow(s) the answer is: it depends on the overflows. you need to give us more information about why you want to drill your tank.

I'm assuming there isn't any overflow in the tank, and that he was either planning on buying a pre made overflow box or fabbing an overflow box, but theoretically you'd never drill the tank down low for power loss, and the first thing that comes to my mind is the bottom is tempered.....

Hmmmm logically thinking he asked where to drill the hole??? There wasn't any mention of using an overflow box around the bulkhead, so with that I cautioned about drilling down low with the bulkhead being unprotected, and in the event of a power outage; be it freak or routine water change, with the bulkhead down low the water would continue to drain to the point of where the bulkhead is located.
This is all assumption on where the bulkhead is located, and if there wasn't some form of standpipe used to raise the height of where the water is being skimmed from. I couldn't imagine someone wanting to look at 20" of PVC pipe inside their DT....

yea if he is just putting in a bulkhead as a return with out an overflow box he has to drill it very close to the water level or bad things can happen

sorry for the confusion, i am wanting to do a sump/refugium, not sure about overflow, still doing alot of reading and researching, I read an article bout drilling down low and it seemed very wrong due to all the reading on here i have done. so i asked straight up, plan on using skimmer of course just not sure where or what type to use/place. something i am researching now, please keep in mind i am new to the SW hobby and am not even close to even thinking bout actually setting one up yet, i do have a 75 g tank with stand and a sump already, got it in a trade for some hunting gear, i am just researching for awhile cause i am going to be moving in the next 8 months and do not want to deal with the hassle of setting up then tearing down just to do it all over again. i have learned so much from just reading threads on here off and on its amazing, thank you all whether you have responded or not, you have helped me alot
