UFC ANNOUNCES UFC 91: COUTURE vs LESNAR
ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® ANNOUNCES UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR
RANDY "THE NATURAL" COUTURE vs. BROCK LESNAR
UFC® WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
SATURDAY, NOV. 15, 2008
LIVE FROM MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA
Las Vegas, NV (USA) – On November 15th, the champ is back.
Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White today announced that after a year away from the game, UFC® heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon to defend his title against rising star Brock Lesnar in a clash of titans destined to shake the foundations of the sport. This championship bout, the biggest heavyweight title fight in years, will headline UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008.
"I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will be returning to action in the Octagon," said Dana White, UFC President. "He's a legend in the UFC, and one of the fighters that helped build this sport. I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath Herring. His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating. It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is one that will go down in the history books."
Ticket information for UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be announced shortly.
UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).
A UFC Hall of Famer whose name is synonymous with mixed martial arts, Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture (16-8) is the only fighter in history to win the UFC world heavyweight title three times, and that’s not even mentioning his two UFC light heavyweight titles. Owner of heavyweight wins over the likes of Maurice Smith, Vitor Belfort, Kevin Randleman, and Pedro Rizzo (twice), the 45-year old Las Vegas resident turned back the clock in 2007 with a stirring win over Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 that netted him his third heavyweight crown. Couture defended his title for the first time at UFC 74 with a third round TKO of number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga, and now the man often referred to as “Captain America” will look to prove once again that he should never be counted out in a fight when he takes on Brock Lesnar.
“I have a lot of respect for Brock as an athlete and a collegiate wrestler, but I know exactly where he’s at, he’s trying to make the transition from a wrestler to mixed martial arts,” said Couture. “I’ve been there, done that, and I know what the pitfalls are. This will be an interesting matchup, and it will be very nice to be home in the Octagon for this fight.”
A physically gifted athlete with the size, speed, and power to impose his will on any opponent, Brock Lesnar (2-1) made an immediate impact in the UFC when he debuted here in February of 2008, and he has his sights set on shocking the world on November 15th. A four-time All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion, and 2000 NCAA Division I National Champion in wrestling, Lesnar made a name for himself internationally after college as a professional wrestler, but he soon found his true love in mixed martial

arts in 2006. After a 69 second win in his pro debut a year later, Lesnar entered the UFC and made a positive impression in a loss to former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 81, but at UFC 87 in August, the Minneapolis-St. Paul resident showed why he is rapidly becoming one of the most feared fighters in the sport today and an immediate threat to the heavyweight throne.

"It's an honor to fight Randy Couture, he's a legend in this sport, and to get the chance to test myself against him is a gift," said Lesnar. "A lot guys would love to have this opportunity, Randy is the UFC heavyweight champion. There is one goal that I've had since I started training in MMA and that is to capture the title. Now that I'm getting the chance, nothing is going to stop me. I'm walking out of the Octagon with the belt around my waist."

im a huge mma fan, however i do not feel brock is ready for a title shot. i would have liked to see him take on kongo and another match after that before he got a title shot. but, whats done is done and this SHOULD make to be a huge draw and HUGE fight that i will order on ppv. lesnar is for real and couture is the ultimate student and will find some holes in brocks game. however i think that brock is to powerful and fast for the champ. if randy can submit he has a chance, if brock learned how to submit or learned better g and p couture is screwed.
I do like the idea of a tournament. the ufc needs to mix it up like that every now and then as well as go no weight class now and then like they use to.

This is better than Penn vs GSP , Better than Silva fighting in the LHW . This is going to put some serious butts in seats . This fight is going to launch UFC beyond . Its going to pull all the WWE fans as well as the UFC fans and is going to be great for the sport . I can not wait for this one .

i think the only reson Brock gets to fight Randy so quick is he still has fan from wwe and they want to pull them over to the UFC. If he was a no namer then he would have to fight up the ladder like everyone else.
If Randy can keep Brock from taking him down "he usta be able to" he will win the stand up. and that is what i want to happen.
GO RANDY!!!!

Should be an excellent fight and Lesnar definaly got to jump up a few rungs for this one. I was watching Randy's training reg before his last title fight and this guy is intense and disaplined Lesnar's only chance is a lucky shot. Randy is also quite an inspriation to be over forty and still defending your title is such a sport is amazing, makes me think I should get my lazy --- up

Just got done watching Lesnar's fights on youtube (they're on there, but you have to dig through the fake ones), and both Herring and Mir were experienced fighters. Obviously not Couture level, but the way Brock physically dominated his opponents was impressive. His lost to Mir was just his inexperience that allowed Mir to get the leg lock. You can see Mir slowly trying to get Brock's leg. Lesnar should have just backed up and let Mir stand back up.

Brock stands a very good chance of taking it . He might not have a lot of skill but he has enough to upset the champ. I am by no means a fan of lesnar , But I do respect the potential danger he poses to the UFC heavy weight division .
Heath Herring is no slouch in that division and Lesnar almost knocked him out . Plus he shut down Herrings ground game . He had him immobilized and frustrated for all 3 rounds . I believe it was a little shell shock from the Mir loss that kept Lesnar from pushing the GnP in the Herring fight . Its the only reason I can see for not finishing him . He had him frustrated enough that he could have moved him around and taken some type of mount and then Tee'd off on him . With 280 pounds behind XXXXL gloves teeing of there's not going to be much of a defense you can use .
He would have easily defeated Mir had Mir not lucked out and got the sweep to leg lock . This fight would not have lasted much longer with the GnP Lesnar was issuing . He was mounting at will and dropping serious bombs . From the get go it looked like Mir was in trouble .
For his size Lesnar is extremely quick.Heck he is faster than guys in lighter divisions . We have yet to see any of his opponents take a solid shot and not go down .
He is extremely dangerous on his feet . He also is pretty big for Randy to muscle around . Randys trade mark clench against the fence isn't going to save him this time . Nor will the dirty boxing . Lesnar has the power to muscle out of it .
Besides Kimbo is not in the UFC and Lesnar is . Kimbo is no where near as dangerous as Lesnar is . Kimbo is not Pro material and Lesnar is . Kimbo can't draw near the fans for a free show that Lesnar can for a PPV .

I agree this is a tad ridiculous. Brock shouldn't be facing Couture yet, he couldn't even finish a sore looking Heath Herring, but I guess a match against Nog, Gonzaga, etc. would probably have the same results as the match with Mir. I think the UFC mentality is that it's two big names that will make $. If Lesnar lands a big blow and drops Randy then it'll be huge for their organization and they'll send Randy on his way, and if Randy wins (likely IMO) then at least he'll make them some $ and be closer to fulfilling his contractual obligation, maybe then we'll even get to see the fight that the fans really want to see (couture vs emelianenko), but I'm pessimistic and am reasonably sure they'll be in diapers and pushing out their walkers for the staredown by the time it ever comes to be. I would say though if I get to sit in the bar drinking a beer and barely keeping myself seated while watching randy outbox and outwrestle a bigger younger dude the way he has in the past (silvia, gonzaga, etc) I'm eagerly looking forward to it! Welcome back mr couture, even if it's against your will, we'll enjoy seeing you in the cage yet again!

brock and a kimbo fight would be good but i would like to see randy win he is 1 of the greats but i think hes getting to old and brock is to strong

all i can say is welcome back and lets get it on.. randy is a simple fighter nothing really that he cant do. he doesnt go into the fight doing a bunch of stupid moves, hes a smart fighter. iam excited to hear that he is back. lesner is well rounded. i think it will go his way if it goes to the ground. everyone knows size in mma doesnt matter. we'll see.. i think its going to be a good fight.

I am excited! We will get this puppy on PPV. I love Randy. I do hope he wins. He is getting up there in age though so I hope he has another few fights in him. This is sure to either be a long drawn out fight or very very quick. I am leaning toward the latter.
