My tank just went through the cycling period and I went to the LFS for my first fish. I put him in there and he went under some rocks and I have not seen him. Is this normal for fish to hide for a couple days? My African's have never done anything like this.
yep normal,, also depends onthe fish, so what size aquarium/lighting/filtration do you have? and when did you setup your tank and test that your cycle was through?
We'll definitely want to consider more information on your tank and the kind of fish. For some fish it is more likely than others. Tank size and parameters are important too. How did you acclimate the fish?

And WELCOME to SWF.com
The fish is a Barbershop Goby. IT was paired with a Pistol Shimp when They were in the LFS, put I have not seen them in my tank to know if they are still together or not. I did see the shrimp last night for a split second when he came out for a piece of food.

I have set up a 10 gallon reef tank. I cycled it with 15 lbs of live rock for 3 weeks. I tested the water every couple days. My LFS said that it would be ready in 4 to 5 days with that much live rock, but I waited a little longer. I am going to be upgradeing my light fixture after the holidays. It has a 24 watt daylight compact on it right now. I plan on getting a 96 watt T5 HO fixture from AquaticLife. The filter I have right now is a Pengiun Bio-Wheel 170. I have also put in a Nano Koralia powerhead for more circulation.

Sadly, definitely not my choice for a first fish in a newly cycled tank...it would not be unusual for it to hide, but also not the toughest fish, IMO.
I do not plan on having any other fish in the tank. It is only 10 gallons. I might get one more fish if I never get to see this one. I an going to fill this tank with corals.
if its cured rocks u used to cycle the tank, 4-5 days is very possible to fully cycled. gobies r known to hide, so just monitor it often. i am sure its still alive for now.

I just saw him for the first time about 20 minutes ago. The shrimp has built a nice little cave for them both. From what I saw, they look fine. I am glad that the cave is in the front of the tank.
