Oh, that's a good answer. It takes more than lighting to keep an anemone happy...
(Where's the damn eye-rolling smiley??)
Clowns don't need a host to survive...there are plenty of clowns that never host anything, and they aren't dead.
AGREED

Clowns choose what they want to live in, not the aquarist.
Somewhere on this forum is a pic where my Occ. Clown decided to host in my Clam for a couple of weeks. I was terrified the clam was going to slam shut and crush it. Eventually the Clown moved to my Anemone.
Clowns do not need Anemones to thrive in an aquarium. There are many alternatives that a clown can happily go to.

In my 29 gal tank...my clown hosted my pulsing xenia...to DEATH! rubbed the poor thing right down to the bare rock!!! When I upgraded to a 75 gal, I bought him an anemone...took him 8 months!!! but he found it!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

I have a pair of true percs that have been living in my hammer coral for about a month now and so far there is no sign whatsoever that they are hurting the coral.
Clowns do NOT need to live in an anemone or coral, and if you get them and dont have something in your tank for them to "live" in, that does not make you a bad aquarist.

I hope the OP got the answer to their question
. Clowns can host a number of different corals. If you have your eye on anything in particular, then we will most likely be able to tell you if your clown is likely to host it. Good luck

That is certainly a concern. Clowns can "love to death" whatever they are hosting, even anemones.
I don't know how they do it, but I'm convinced Clowns somehow "communicate" with whatever they are hosting. My Clam snaps shut whenever a fish swims over it, or brushes it, etc. Yet, somehow, one of my Clowns lived in it for about 10 days.
As soon as I figure out how to reload pics I'll post it.

Thats crossed my mind as well. Ive seen pictures of green star polyps hosting clowns, and they stay opened for it to do what it wants. Yet, when I touch my GSP, it closes very fast (for a coral). Im willing to bet some kind of chemical communication, or maybe some kind of response to the clown's skin. Maybe a layer or some kind of reaction with the scales?

It really doesn't matter, there are exceptions to the rules, the problem lies in the fact that people shouldn't recommend anything other then an anemone. People need to stop replying to questions they have no clue how to answer. Giving advice thats not accurate only encourages irresponsible reefkeeping.
WOW.... you stated something that you are doing. You have no clue how to answer the post but you did. Clowns do not need anything but saltwater and food to live. If you have corals and it decides to host in one then guess what..there is nothing you can do about it!!!!! So just enjoy it and move on!!!!!!!!!!!

nonetheless.....watching a clown love anything...whether it be a coral or an anemone is what this hobby is all about....when my clown finally took to my anemone it made my day..and my effort at this hobby was worth all the ups and downs it has given me...I love watching him cuddle and float in the sweet arms of his anemone...he truly is "at home" Aahhhhhh....
I have renamed him ..."sweet baby james"

I cant wait for mine to host a coral of mine, yet I think the coral has to be a little bit bigger than the clown, which can be an issue (Im growing out frags, and he seems to be winning).

It took my captive bred Occ. 6 months and a move to a different aquarium (same anemone).
The process she took to host is what first made me start thinking about the "communication" issue. She suddenly began swimming over the anemone one day. Then, over the course of several days she kept hovering and passing closer and closer. Then she began lightly biting and rubbing her nose on a tenacle. Took her a few days to actually move in. While she was doing that my male clown moved into the Clam, lol. I guess he didn't want to be homeless. Soon after she started hosting he moved in as well.
This also began to make me question the theory that "hosting" is a learned behavior. She's clearly a captvive bred clown, but I'd be amazed if she had ever observed this kind of behavior before.

There was a thread on here before, where a guy took a picture of a clown in an anemone and taped it to the side of his tank, and supposedly it hosted shortly after. I dont know if he was just playing around, but it would definitely support your theory.

Actually that would oppose my theory, hehe. That idea suggests it's a learned behavior. I've heard the picture method before, but never seen it work (although never have tried it either
)
He is a pic of my clown in my clam.

Oops, meant to say that haha. I would be scared if my clown hosted a clam, for the reason you were. I saw a picture where a clown was hosting sand (not even kidding), so who knows.

I have used the picture method taped to the side of the tank I am not sure if that really helped or not but they hosted soon afterwards so.
journey that picture reminds me of the regal tang with its head stuck in the clam LOL

I know... It had me terrified. The clam normally snapped shut so quikcly anytime anything got around it I was sure the little guy was doomed...
