so im wanting to build some shelves to rest my live rock on and i was going to use pvc or plastic pipes as legs and acrylic sheets as the shelf part (see through) . what im wondering is this.... what can i use to glue the legs onto the acrylic sheets? can i usea silicon "caulking"? will this stick even? or is there some type of special glue that will be clear and not get eaten by salt water? also, it needs to be able to glue plastic to acrylic and obviously be strong enuff to support the weight of a few pounds of rock. any insights?

I'm kind of in the same boat because I want to glue acrylic baffles in my sump tank. I went to Menard's the other night and they have a tube of clear sealant that is specially for aquariums. It's smaller than a bottle of caulk and in a green tube.
Technically it says that it's only for glass-to-glass connections but I thought I would give it a try. I glued the baffles in last night and checked on it this morning. They are very secure. It suggests letting the sealant cure for 48 hours.

Silicone does not really work all that well at sticking acrylic to glass, or acrylic to acrylic. However if its not got to be a water tight joint, and there is no presure exerted oly on one side as would be typical of an aquarium side, it should hold good enough. I find Marine Goop to be a far superior adhesive to join acrylic to glass. Marine goop would hold just fine on acrylic pieces, much better than silicone would, but why not look for some weldon #3 or 4 or even 16 to stick that acrylic togethewr with?
