which is better in your opinion-acryllic or glass?

I bought my "big' tank 2 years ago. Decided on acrylic. Wish I had gone glass...I feel like I am trying to scrape algea off of butter..
The only thing that would keep me from a glass tank in the future will be weight. i once had a 10o that was glass. Damn thing didn't like moving even with a few people.
With my plastic 125 I can carry it myself.
Also if you buy glass make sure you know exactly what you want as alterations I much more difficult.

Somebody asked for an opinion. Yes I know this subject has been beat to death. But most people want a quick answer so a quick answer was given.
I could send this person all over the board only to come back with the same basic information....
-glass is heavy
-acrlyic is a small percentage clearer
-acrylic is easier to modify
-algea does not stick to glass as well and you can use better tools to clean it
-You can have an open top with glass(acrylic usually has portholes)
-Seemless rounded corners are the coolest thing since bread machines
-if on a proper stand and baring outside force...acrylic will never leak break or crack...glass can develop leaks

If we seearch hard enough....every topic we cover has been covered somewhere.......
All we do is repeat....it is a cycle
hehehe
acrylic tanks last longer baring outside assistance (lights are outside assistance)
Everything i have ever seen says that acrylic is a small(like 3-6 percent) clearer. Where did you see this? thing could be getting oputdated because I rarely see glass tanks with a green tint to them anymore....that is usually mentioned as a problem. Agreed a small issue.
Glass tanks are often braced with thin pieces of steel. Gives teh impression of an open top much more than most acrylic tanks i've seen

It is your choice to answer or not answer. Hell, all I got to do is go to the fish store to get an answer (which I did). But I wanted to get other opinions. (Maybe catch something I didn't know). I do know a few of the things that was written. Obviously there are different opinions. Do you think I should go to 20 different stores or just get on the computer for different opinions. It would have been easier for you to skip this post . This sight is here for people to help and get help, not for you to tell people go find answers somewhere else.

Very true...
and for the most part if people would talk face to face they would agree because this format is so poor to have a discussion because no matter how much you write....it is easy to find holes in arguments....primarly cause I am a SLOW typer...
What did you decide on?

I really like acryllic and clearness only matters if there is a glass tank right next to it to compare it to, but the algae is a major concern for me. Also considering I am going to build my next tank, I dont know if I can even mess with acryllic. Even though the glass will be heavy, it may be easier for me.

Sorry that the thread had to get so heated. Acrylic vs. Glass, probably as much disagreement as MH vs VHO, heck folks, Red's right in one respect, if you don't wanna discuss, skip the topic. On the other hand, Red, the people that posted were expressing their opinions. I've found, in general, (note the IN GENERAL) that by running several web searches and reading the message boards most (again note, MOST) of my questions have been beaten to death and so I generally (note GENERALLY) don't ask questions that I can find volumes of information on just be spending the time to research. Please, I'm NOT being a smart ass, I just happen to be a newbie who understands the frustration of the "old-timers" in rehashing things that must have been beaten to death. BTW, my tank is wood and glass, just cuz I've never worked with acrylic and choose to go with something that's been around since forever.
Just my not so humble opinion,
Later,
Paul

You know what I do when I see a post that I've seen posted before? I skip it and not be a smart ass. If I want to answer then I will, but I am by no means going to disparage someone who simply asks a question. As a matter of fact, I would say more than 50% of the posts have been asked one way or another. And, btw, the rest of the info that has been asked is somewhere on the internet. Does that mean I should go find it on the internet because you feel like it is your duty to anwer my posts like you are better than me?

How many people have checked this post to see the answers? Last count 106. I would say because they want to know the answer also, what do you think? You are the selfish one, you want to dictate what everyone asks.

I one upped on the collie....I went and got a mastiff
In looking at the DIY page it seems pretty obvious that many posts would be considered done to death...On person asks if they need a skimmer....another is how to make a refuge...
Both of these have been covered more than once......
However....this hobby changes very often. New products are always coming out and new techniques are always being developed.
going through these beat to death topics can sometimes lead to somebody learning something new...I said sometimes..
For the most part it seems like beat to death topics are what keep some boards going.
There is also a funny feeling that messageboard spats can give a person.... They are often taken way to seriously..
Gotta go...the dog is eating my shoe

You aren't much of a thinker. People read posts to see answers and reply...How would they know what was being said? So your statement doesn't make sense. You can check all you want, it doesn't matter to me I'm not bent out of shape, you are.I have a life outside of this board you obviously don't. You aren't that important for me to check your profile like you checked mine. Iam not the pissy one. You are mad because I asked a question, remember? Ofcoarse people can respond how they want. What I am saying is that if you don't have anything positive then just move on. infe, Y should it bother you that people want info?Did you know that you can skip posts? You don't have to read them all! Ed isn't reaming any body(maybe you). Why would a topic make people leave the hobby? What are you thinking about? Most of us ( smart ones )Pick the posts we want to read and answer. You never know, Brew may have a solution to get algae off the acryllic that he didn't post yet, but unless I ask I won't know. Yeah, I see posts that I know the answers to, but I don't get mad if they don't know (what is a copepod, do I need a skimmer) but so what, let them ask. It definately does make me say this is too intense I better raise puppies.
