I don't know about the common part. Ours, that giant red thing, is at least 2" long and sleeps with our 4" LMB and we only see it, about every 2 mos. or so, when I change around the rocks, for about 2 seconds when I pull up the rock it's hiding under. I don't know what he's eating but I am suspecting that he has about 4 or 5 blue chromis under his belt. This is not the ocean... this is a 100 gal. tank.

here is a picture of my tiger and my pink spotted shrimp goby together, they never leave each other, and they are only out of sight during lights out. my shrimp is always digging something , and makes his cracking sounds alot, they are so loud you can hear it from any spot on that floor.

Brock...how did you get your pink spot goby and pistol together? I bought a tiger pistol about 3 weeks ago and the 2nd day, my goby try to eat it. Ever since then I've only seen the shrimp once. Kind of a waste. Would love to see the two together. I know it's there since the landscape is always changing.
A couple advice on pistol shrimps.
Make sure your sand is not so fine. Have a variety of sizes in your sand bed.
Last, make sure your tank is not too deep. Otherwise, like in my 54g corner, it'll dig in the back not in the front where you can see him all the time.

To my knowledge, bullseye pistols usually will not pair up with gobies. Tigers are the easiest to pair up with gobies. I've got an unidentified pistol that has paired with an orange spotted guttata in my reef...
