You-all know I can't resist these power head threads :D
As you can see below if energy bill is a concern the 900's would be the way to go and it never hurts to have an extra one handy. I would suggest at least two for the tank up to and including 4 for a 90 depending on how you have it plumed and the type of return pump/power you have. Also one for mixing your salt mix for water changes.
Maxi Jets Wattage:
600 = 7.5 watts per hour
900 = 8.5 watts per hour
1200 = 20 watts per hour!!!

MP400 120/60 5 400 106 .73 29 $27.90
MP600 120/60 7.5 600 160 1.35 53 $32.85
MP900 120/60 8.5 870 230 1.17 46 $38.40
MP1200 120/60 20 1110 295 1.74 69 $42.85
But you can get them for much less on line

I bought 3 maxi-jet 900s last week from someone on ----. They were brand new, never opened...only cost $45 for all of them together. :D

Is there a way to position the powerheads so they don't disturb the sandbed. I have a maxi1200 in my 55 gal. and unless it is pointed up toward the surface it makes drifts in the sandbed. I'm alittle afraid to put another in because of this. How do you position them?

Most advice will tell you to have one in each back corner and point toward the center front of tank, now if this does not work for you then point them toward the front opposite corner or across tank if you will. Try that and see if it works, you might even try taking the flared piece off. It's called tinker and adjust.

I had a sandstorm from h-e-double hockey sticks after I added my powerheads to my new future reef...this was after the Southdown had settled, so I was a little irritated, to say the least. But, a couple of days ago I added 50 pounds of LR, and it has never been cleaner in there. I have 1 powerhead pointing straight across the tank above the LR, and the other is on the other side, slightly lower, and pointing downwards to the corner. It moved the sand a little, but IMHO, it looks more like the ocean that way than if the sand was flat and straight across everywhere. Besides, your cleaners will move it for you anyway. :D

I agree MaxiJets are the way to go - I got an AquaClear powerhead, and one Rio and they were the biggest POS 's in the world - switched them out with the MJ 900's and am very very happy. Nice flow rates, great adjustability, very dependable, I have nothing bad to say about the maxi jets.
