I have used IO for 3 1/2 years and have never had any issues with chemical spikes of any kind. Since I started using RO/DI water 1 1/2 years ago, I have no water quality issues of any kind. If you have an ammonia issue-it is absolutely your water.

Just jumping in...An ammonia issue could mean the bio load is too great for the bacteria to take care of.
Keeping the filtration too clean kills the good bacteria as well as the nasty stuff. Rinsing the filter pads in saltwater not freshwater could help..
