Which surge protector?

When picking a surge protector, are Joules of protection important or what should I look for to insure everything is setup correctly? Are the $20 surge protectors good or do I need to go better then that?
Currently I have 2 dedicated 20-amp lines running to my tank. Each line is connected to one GFCI outlet and I have some cheap surge protectors running off each outlet. I want to get better surge protectors to avoid any possible fire issues.
I plan on dividing the power as follows unless any electrical experts want to throw in an opinion:
Line #1 -
1st outlet - will have a surge protector to run my sump equipment (skimmer, heater and return pump)
2nd outlet will have a timer to run one of my 250w lighting ballasts
Line#2 -
1st outlet - will have a surge protector to run 4 powerheads and heater in display tank
2nd outlet - will have a surge protector to run 2-250w lighting ballasts on timers for other lights.
Thanks

Well I just installed a GFCI outlet behind my tank and I also put a water proof box around it, that I picked up at Home Depot (I feel much better now about the electricity and water deal
). The GFCI outlets are your best bets against any issues such as fires or power surges however every surge protector I've looked at says specifically to NOT use with aquariums. I just mounted mine about two feet high inside my stand so that there are drip loops on every cord that is plugged into it. Check it out.
