White Cheek Tang

I was surfing the net today and I read on R*** C****** that a white cheek tang can be kept in a 75 gallon. I was so surprised because I thought that it needed to be kept in a very large aquarium like the Powder Blue. I then checked every forum I knew and saw the same information at least somewhere and checked a bunch of other sites and they all said either 70 or 75. Would it be okay in a 75? This is a really beatiful fish that I have always admired and if I would be able to keep it that would make my day. Are these very hard to keep? (I got mixed information on that) Has anyone actually done this?

well IMO, tangs shouldnt be kept in tanks less than 100 gallons and expect to survive their entire life. they need a lot of swimming area..you can get away with bristle tooth tangs, chevron tangs, kole tang..
white cheeks are hard to take care of..plus they can get to like a good 10 inches.. its one heck of a looker!

I was just surprise that they gave out that information. I would never put a 10in fish in a 75 gallon. Just thought I would check it out since it is one of my favorites. I was going to get a yellow tang for my 75 gallon and give it back to the LFS when it gets bigger but would a tomini tang do well in a 75?

I agree with keeping tangs in a 100gal or bigger but some tanks provide enough swimming room. For example, my 84 gal (72" 15" 18") I have to tangs. Yellow tang and Powder brown tang (white cheek) and they are doing great. You could get it but from observing them they swim a ton so a 4' tank might be enough swimming room. I also disagree on them getting 10" in a home aquarium; they can get that big in the wild or in huge systems but not in the common home aquaria. I will try to get a picture of them later.

I was reading and every thing was saying around 8 in. so I am not going to get it. Also I was not referring to the powder brown they are Acanthurus japonicus and I was talking about Acanthurus nigricans. They look very similar but very different. : )

The Powder Brown and the Whitecheek are two different Tangs.

Yeah, they get around 8" but not sure how big they get in captivity. I read they are more difficult to keep than the Achilles Tang.

75 gallons is the MINIMUM, that doesn't mean that you should put the fish in that size tank. Queen angelfish get 18-20 inches long and their minimum tank size is 180 gallons, and I agree, that they may get that large in the wild, but in captivity the QA will probably get 14 inches or so, but still, that's HUGE for a 180 gallon.
