A small LFS has a musroom rock for $45. The rock is a decent size and has at least 6 mushrooms maybe more. They re white though. Is this OK? I think Ive read somewhere that when theyre white like that they re not doing well. I know for a fact they ve been in that tank for a while. Is this a good deal?

white shrooms huh? the only white shrooms ive seen are the ones that fall down in dark crevices of my lr. they turn white because they arent gettign enough light. amybe in the lfs tank they still arent gettign enough light. im not sure. how long have they been in there? do they run any copper treatments in there?

Theyve been in there all summer. There isnt any lites over the tank except for the regular store lighting. I thougt lighting wasn't an issue with Mushrooms. I have N.O. lites. Will they do better in my tank or should I leave them at the store.

Maybe if its on an 8 lb rock but it sounds way overpriced for bleached-out mushroom rock. I would spend the money on some more live rock if I were you.

I have a 75 gallon tank with 7 varieties of mushrooms on the bottom part of the tank (to 1/3 of the way up). I have a lower level light that is on first in the morning and then late at night (96 watt power compact). The rest of the light is filled with 440 watts of VHO light (nearly 6 watts per gallon). My mushrooms don't respond until the VHOs come on. At that point they open up completely.
I have a 10 gallon nano that had 30 watts of NO lighting over it. The mushrooms in there are from the bottom to halfway up the tank. They did average. Two 32 watt PCs replaced the NOs. The mushrooms in that tank are now exploding in size and multiplying.
Whether they need it or not, I can't be certain, but I have seen a definite difference in the mushrooms under NO vs VHO or PC lighting. I'm not saying to put them at the top of a tank under high wattage, but they do seem to do much better with VHO or PC vs. NO lighting. They were placed in a position to allow them to "run for cover" and none of them have moved away from the light.

i bought some mushrooms at a lfs that were metallic green(i think thats what it was) but when i got home and put them in my fish tank they were just white. so i assume that i didnt have the right lighting for them and i took them back to the lfs.. so maybe the fish store doesnt have the right light and thats why they look white....:)

there are white muchrooms. I have some at work.. they are greowing and splitting so i know thats the color they are suppose to be. they are more wrinkely and compact than other muchrooms i have seen. they almost look like a mold growing on the rock. when i first saw then i thought they were some sort of sponge. If they are in a tank with no lights on, they would definately do better in your tank, even if you only have NO lights. I dont think that they should be that expensive if they have been there all summer. talk to them and see if they will come down a little, since they are probably going to die if they dont get some more light. What kind of store that sells corals doesnt have lights above their tanks???

let me get this straight, there is no lighting whatsoever on this tank ? none at all? Mushrooms are a lees light demanding coral, but nevertheless, their only energy source comes form the zooxanthellae that they harbor inside their tissue. these litle guys are what need light to produce energy for the mushroom to grow. if htey have no lights on their tank, then they might just be bleached out. i agree with blennybabe that there are some white shrooms out there but even these tend to have a slight hue to them, whether it be blue, or green , etc. like i said before, i have shrroms that fall into crevices, adn turn white to almost transparetn, but still hang on because they get a very marginal amont of light somehow. i woud pass on them, or ask them to drop it in price cause you think they are bleached, get em for cheap and put em in your tnak, and see wat happens. they migh tcome back beautifully, who knows!
good luck

I have never heard of white shrooms except for ones that are not happy!
Even in the worst lighting shrooms should not be white?
And yes the do require lighting.
The price $45 is too much for this gamble in my opt.
Do not put anything in your tank that might be unhealthy. just my 2 cents, ;)
