From your bio your skimmer should be good for your for your 55 gal tank, as long as you are getting good foam production. Keep the skimmer clean and make sure the venturi stays open and clean that will maximize foam Production. Wet or dry skimate is up to you, I aim somewhere in between. too wet and you remove trace elements as well. Noticed you had silversides as a food choice? Nothing in a reef tank should be eating something that big, sounds like you are over feeding and that is the cause of your nitrate problem. Also are you using tap water or RO and or DI for your makeup water and replacement water? Your tap water can also contain excessive nitrates. Did not mean this to turn into a water quality lecture just trying to help. good luck with the (Favia)

LOL Sorry Matt! - We'll see though, I think this favia might have been on it's way out, that's why they gave it to me. I was using silversides, big lessons learned- I fed them for fun to the crabs every once in a while... well, I call 2 of my emerald crabs "the hulks" cause they are almost 3 inches across when they hold their arms out!
I am using R/O water- I test every batch I make for:
PH-
Ammo
Nitrites
Nitrates
Phosphates
KH
Calcium
I have made an additional 15 gallons today, which I plan to vaccum the substrate again tomorrow once the water is up to temp...
Thanks for all of your help- When I vaccumed the sand, the water that came out was literally greenish/brown... I think this might have been the problem.
I'll let you know how it goes!
