Hello All,And BETH
I set up my dream tank, a 120 gallon high a week before christmas. Live sand and Arag-alive (pink fiji islands) cylcled the tank in 4 weeks. I have purchased a 6 stage RO and DI unit especially for this tank. Iam running an oversized 200 gal wet dry with rio 14 hf. After 4weeks I added a Remora Pro skimmer. Which was highly recommended on this forum. Excellent !! I also then added a 36 watt UV. I had 2 green chromis while cycling I added a Queen Angel on january 18, After afew days I started to notice a spot of white salt like thing on her dorsal fin and a few on her tail fin. I think it is ick or ?? Please help. PH is 8.4 Temp is 77 Ammonia is 0 nitrites and nitrates are both 0.
Phosphates are 0. I suspect that I brought it in when I bought the Queen angel from the LFS.Sorry to say I did not set up the QT tank that I have. I have been running a 55 gallon with a Blue hippo tang that I had for 11 years before it died last year. Any help would be appreciated. This is a Fish Only Tank, The Queen Angel is eating very well and does not appear to be affected by these "white spots" .Thank you Tom

Hi All,
I have lowered the Salinity on my main tank( fish only) to 1.009. I have purchased a Refractometer. The large white spot of ick has gone away but there are several small spots remaining on the pectoral fins and tail. My question is How long after I lower salinity to 1.009 can I expect all white spots togo away? Then I will wait another 4 weeks. Any advise is appreciated. Water parameters are: AMM=0, NITRATE=0, NITRITE=0 PHOSP=0 TEMP=77, PH=8.2 The 1.009 salinity has been at this level since FEB.09.
Thanks, Tom C.
Can anyone Please respond to this Question...Thank You

That does sound like ich. Is your tank FO?? You can not do hypo in any tank but FO.

Are you also checking your pH? pH can drop quickly using hyposalinity.
Does your refractometer also read salinity? 1,009 is the specific gravity reading.

Beth,
The PH reading is 8.4 (Hand-held Gauge)and the Salinity is 13 From Refractometer.
Thank You Tom C.

Ok, ich is not effected by hypo or copper until the parasite drops off the fish.
What temp is your tank?

Hello Beth,
The Queen Angel is a very good eater and greets you at the front of the tank, especially in the morning. She is extremely active and looks very happy. Tom C.

You did calibrate the refractometer, correct? Can you post a picture of the fish?

Beth,
I calibrated the refractometer according to instructions. I will try to send a photo but it does not take precise close-ups. Thank you. Tom C.

Beth,
I calibrated the Refractometer according to instructions and it appears to be working well. I have tested it on my 55 Gallon also. I tried to send a photo but it tells me that it is too big. I have tried to compress it but it still will not send. I can send regular email though. Thank You, Tom C.

Hello All,
Finally all of the white spots are ALL gone. It took from Jan.27 '06 to march 10, '06 , at the lower Salinity of 1.009 (refractometer) I will now wait 4 weeks then gradually raise the salinity. Tom C. :happyfish

as a precautionary measure for helping reduce chance of another outbreak raise your temp to 82.degrees ich cannot thrive in warmer waters.
PHP Code:
Code:

Beth Ok, ich is not effected by hypo or copper until the parasite drops off the fish.
[/code]
copper unlike hypo kills the paresites on the fish also by stripping the natural slime coat making the paresite subject to the copper, breaking the cycle from the fish itself and the enviroment.this is the one reason copper is so effective.but does not kill the unhatched eggs. until they are hatched
