quick question hopefully quick answer. Ive got a white substance on my decorations and starting to stick on my aquarium. it is white and hard and like a big salt particle. i cant brush it off i have to scrape it off. is it salt? it is a fish only tank and all readings are fine including the salt reading. ive had the tank for 1 year and it just started. nothing new added or done recently.

Sounds like calcium precipitation. Do you add a calcium supplement?

No no, I'm sure if you don't know about it, then you don't need to add it. A lot of people add it, not knowing why and they end up with problems.
What about buffers? You add any of those?

i add ro water so the only thing i add everyone once in a while is the additive to lower nitrates and nitrites but i have done that for the two years and this just started.

Lets try a different approach. Maybe my mental picture is off... Is this a white film or is it white dots?
There is a critter called a spirorbidae worm that looks like little tiny white dots on the glass. Here's a pic. This pic is a very close shot, but is this anything close?

PM sent. I cannot explain how to post pics. It's simple to do, but I just do not know how to 'splain it.

Well that wasn't so bad. That pic was within the size permits of the sight.
When you reply, you have the big white box, under that section is another box labeled "additional options"
Hit manage attachments and opt and upload the chosen pic. If the pic is to big you hafta go through photobucket, but if they are this size, then you can just upload.
Anyway, I told you I couldn't explain it. Sorry.
My guess is still spirorbid worms.
