White Zoos

My lfs recieved a rock about a foot across covered with white zooanthids. They are advertising them as rare "silver zoos" and asking for $89. Are these really that rare? I've definately never seen them before and I'm wondering if I can propagate them for people.
Any info appreciated.

A 12" rock of white zoanthids and they are asking $89? Either they are bleached common zoanthids or your LFS is seriously cheap! White ones are pretty rare.

yea...i have seen them around online(but very little)....but if its a 12 inch rock that is loaded, for 89, then they must not be that rare because usually rares would go for 25 just for 10 or so polyps ya know...or you may just be lucky...
i bet oceana would be one to know for sure as it seems they get zoos every day

Like Wax said, did they appear just bleached, or did it really look like its true color? It is usually fairly normal to tell the difference.

dogstar, although you were expecting white zoo's they still came out nice. they could have been common green zoos.

My lfs has these too, except they are on a rock with some pink zooanthids, so they are just asking 50 or so dollars...

The local reef store I go to has some crazy zoo's. There all different colors, not just the common green and brown ones. The sell good sized frags there for only 15-25 depending on how rare they are.

I got these for 20bucks.

They are really white! Should I scoop them up? They have been under metal halide at the store now for over a week and are still pure white like snow. This is the lfs I sell frags to, and I goto college with one of the saltwater guys that works there, so they wouldn't do me wrong. Should I buy these? Its about 100 snow white polyps for $89.

i dont know, thats alot just for 100 polyps....but if they are rare then its a pretty good deal.....id have to see em...but if they're pure white i think thatd be pretty sweet to have...and im sure you can make up for spending 90 as well through trades and frags...so why not?lol

i mean the price is right for the amount, if these stay white youll be able to quickly make $$ back with frags of these at a price they should be at. Like the guy above, even if they change color, a foot long rock full of zoos isnt bad either way you look at it

Although said to be rare, IMO they dont really exsist. Its been said here that it a good price and that its not, so....As mine looked trully white but were not. A bleached coral would normally look transparent. You can sort of see through them. But mine as the photo shows were bright and solid, not transparent at all and led me to think they were natural. anyway....
Your money, if you want them then get them. You a big boy right ? Make a choice and live with it.

To tell you a little story about zoa's, LFS employee was explaining how you can change the colors of zoa's by dosing the skirts with iodine. As he's telling me this, the gentleman is missing some key strategic front teeth, which prevented my wife from looking at him, but looked around the store and noticed the owner was shooting daggers at the guy giving me this information, and as we walked by the owner, the employee said he's the one who taught me that little trick. Personally I've never tried it, but this is one sure way the employee indicated you can get the skirts to turn orange.

thats crazy, stupid iodine...stupid lfs.....but if the iodine isnt that bad for your tank then why not shoot it up, as long as your not doing it to making a profit off of other people, tricking them....but lets see some pics if you get them!!

If you want them, get them...but I reckon they color up in the end. I'm just not familiar with too many pure white photosynthetic animals. Seeing as they like to dye these animals different colors, they would probably not have issues trying to bleach them either. I think Dogstar's sotry would be enough to get me to save my money.

I brought in 13 small xenia frags and five small galaxea frags and he traded the rock straight up. I'll try to get a pic of it when I can. They are still snow white with a tiny bit of a pink hue when they close up. Even if they turn slightly pink, I am very happy.
Do you guys think pinkish ones are worth much? I got them for free so be honest.
ps- My lfs just got in some beautiful ricordia about 2 inches in diameter. The rics are a lovely green, blue, and red. They are charging $40 each which is way high for this lfs. Is that pricing normal for nice-looking ricordea? I still have about $40 store credit and I am eyeballing those. Can you propagate ricordia as easily as shrooms?

i think they're awesome, but i love all zoos unless pure brown...but ive seen a lot of people selling, or claiming to sell pink zoos...so i'm not sure if they are "worth" tons when selling, ive seen frags anwhere from $9-20...but you can always find someone(like me) to send them to..haha.
get those pics coming
