Start with a breed that is new keeper friendly, such as H. erectus or H.kuda
Get them from a reputable breeder!!!! Make sure they are eating frozen!
If you want dwarves you will have to get another tank-a REALLY small one, plus all the dwarves I've ever heard of have to be fed frozen foods.
Make sure your tank is cycled!
Do not overstock, ammonia is very toxic to seahorses.
Make sure if you add any tankmates they are suitable to be housed with seahorses.
Check out (seahorse.org) it is an excellent website, although I may get into trouble for posting the website name

You can also find reputable breeders on that site
I'm sure I've forgotten many, many things hopefully crimzy will chime in

I thought of something else important: Feed your horses from a feeding dish. It can be anything glass: an ashtray, sugar bowl or I use a shot glass about 3/4 full of sand so it isn't too deep. Once you thaw the food in some tank water, you can use a turkey baster to squirt it into the bowl. Since it is very important to syphon out any uneaten food after every feeding, it makes it much easier if the leftovers are all in one place and not all over the tank.
