Who is the best college football player?

I have to admit that, while I love my local teams, I'm not a huge fan of college football outside of the Big Ten. And since I personally believe that my Lions will finish off the perfect season (not talking about Penn State), and get the first overall draft pick, I wonder who it may be.
Who is the best player in college football? Who will be the best pro?
People around here have mentioned Ohio State's Laurinitis. I just don't know enough about the players on Texas, Alabama, etc to know if there is a can't miss guy out there.

Those qb's are not on my list... they may be best college style Qb's.. not sure about longivity... they say GA qb is a better prospect.
Rb? Moreno from GA, Wells from O.State, USC stable of backs?
O-Line ?
D-Line ?
Db?
Lb? Matanuga USC (spelling?) is pretty good, Larinitus would be 2nd IMO
WR- Crabtree is going to be a beast in the NFL, however there are a bunch of talented freshman

Assuming that the Lions have any brains whatsoever, I don't expect the first pick to be a quarterback, receiver or running back. I think the first pick will be a stud defensive player, unless there is an Orlando Pace/Jake Long out there somewhere.

Detroit or any other languishing team needs to grab a big name other players will want to play with. If Offense is their biggest need grabbing one of the QB's would make sense. If Defense then there is a guy at Bama or Malaluga from USC would be possible.
There are going to be some bargains at QB over the next two seasons. I think Tebow will go lower than a lot of people think.

I agree that Tebow may drop. Personally, if I was running an NFL team, I'd NEVER draft a QB in the first round. For every Peyton Manning, there is a Joey Harrington, David Carr, Ryan Leaf, etc. I don't have the stats handy but I believe that there are at least as many lower round draft picks starting in the NFL as first rounders. JMO.

I'd probably trade a first pick for an established NFL player and a couple lower picks in the first and second round. Increases your odds of helping the team

I do however think the Lions need a qb... Matt Ryan is faired pretty well.. I however would look for a QB in 2nd. You could get a Matt Stafford, but picks like:
1. Tim Tebow, Florida (Junior)
2. Matthew Stafford, Georgia (Junior)

3. Nate Davis, Ball State (Junior)

4. Curtis Painter, Purdue
5. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma (3rd Year Sophomore)
6. Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan (Junior
)
7. Cullen Harper, Clemson
8. Colt McCoy, Texas (Junior)
9. Mark Sanchez, USC (Junior)

10. Hunter Cantwell, Louisville
11. Mitch Mustain, USC (Junior)
12. Josh Freeman, Kansas State (Junior)
13. Rusty Smith, Florida Atlantic (Junior)
14. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech

15. Todd Boeckman, Ohio State
16. Rudy Carpenter, Arizona State

17. Chase Daniel, Missouri
18. Todd Reesing, Kansas (Junior)
19. Willie Tuitama, Arizona
20. Chase Holbrook, New Mexico State
21. Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State (Junior)
22. Tom Brandstater, Fresno State
23. Ryan Perrilloux, LSU (Junior)
24. Mike Teel, Rutgers
25. Stephen McGee, Texas A&M
Bold are some names... I think LeFevour will be an excellent qb.. in the mold of a Tony Romo, perhaps better. Nate Davis also looks pretty good... both are MAC qb's that have strong arms and can run

Horrible Pro QB prospects this year, as of Oct. 23, Mel Kiper didn't have one single first round QB on his board. I think Colt McCoy is the Heisman if the season ended today, but Saturdays game will go a long way to deciding that. Not enough arm strength for the NFL yet though, Tebow is not ideal either. Bradford is probably the best NFL QB prospect other than Sanchez, whom just lacks experience.
Crimzy if Detroit gets the first pick they will likely take that DE from Texas.
Curious where that list is from Rylan, Kiper doesn't have Wells or Tebow in the first round as of Friday.

Not sure his name but I don't even see a Texas DE on Rylan's list above for the entire first round.
I would love to see a guy who could come in on the D-line and get 10 sacks a year. If there's no guy like that then I'd like to see them take an elephant on the O-line.

That would be the type of draft I like... all nuts and bolts, guys in the trenches. I would find it interesting that Javon Ringer is the highest rated RB and the only one taken in the first round. No "skilled" positions taken until 19... that would be pretty wild.

I noticed that as well, I do think Kiper likes to see more of the skill guys before he decides on them, and I also think he is a bit of a "running backs are a dime a dozen" guy other than the really really elite ones.....I.E. don't waste a first round pick on Darren McFadden when you can get Steve Slaton in the 3rd round.
