Not sure if it is the same now - back in the day the second hand on a real one sweeps smooth with no hesitation and on a fake one it ticks - jerks at every second. Also, back then the emblem on the crown was a little crooked on the fake ones. This was over "gulp" 20 years ago - so they probally make the fake ones better now.

The new fakes are very hard to tell if you get a "quality one". A quality fake will cost about $1000 which never made sense to me. The second hand sweep is just like a real rolex on the ones with Japanese movements. The movements made in China are still jerky. There are other signs also like a fake is usually lighter. The font of the letters, the length of the second hand, the shade of blue and for about the last five years, Rolex laser cuts the rolex crown inside the crystal at the 6 o'clock. It is very small and you have to hold it just right to see it.

Some are very hard to tell though. But, if you have a fake one and don't know it, you are not too bright.

I have an American Waltham gold pocket watch, manufactured in 1887; a Lord Elgin retangular from the 1930's, a Tissot 100 series, and the cherry on the cake - a Zenith Chronomaster with an El Primero movement in 18K gold - I love that watch! Zenith is one of the few watch companies that actually makes movements - most watch companies actually are case manufacturers who fill the case with a movement made by one of only 5 true movement manufacturers. For example, Tag and the Rolex Daytona are actually modified Zenith movements, many others are made by ATA.

The next time you see your brothers, have him pull out winder and look for this.

I've never seen a fake submariner that copied the triplock feature of the Rolex but I'm sure there are some if you get into the thousand dollar ones. It also has the three dots on the stem cap that represents it's 300M underwater depth.

Or when you get the chance, hold it up to a real one and feel the weight difference if any and look at them closely.
Oh, like the Movado. My wife has one she bought about 12 years ago.
