I was wondering who or where would be able to test tap water for copper and silicates(sp?.) I was thinking maybe pool places or maybe like a town hall. What do you think?

Please, for all the tap users, post why you can't use it. That and curiosity's got the best of me.:D

It contains copper. Not good, since im doing a full reef tank, and going to need inverts. Off to buy about 120 gallons! im so excited:rolleyes: and I cant buy an RO unit (my parents) but if it was up to me id be kicken out RO water, for half the price and time and gas and effort that it will take me to buy it.:nope:

Masala not sure about Brighton...but I live Clarkston and the tap here is good little high in iron and calcium. If you have Detroit City then your probably out of luck...we have a community well and they don't add copper, but I did have a reef tank in Rochester and used the tap there as well (I can't remember, but I believe that was Detroit City water)....so I would think about having it tested. Your lfs could test for some elements as well you might have to adjust for some things.

Why won't your parents let you hook up an RO unit? Perhaps if you write down the cost savings and show your parents something in black and white then they would understand, plus the pain of hauling tons of water around and the gas used to go get it.

Show your parents some studies about how much junk is in drinking water, and sell them on the benefits of an RO unit for drinking purposes! Plus with the savings in time & money over the long haul, it just makes sense. A tap water filter (such as PUR) won't do much (I'm assuming that's what you're talking about, if not please correct me). I was hoping that a PUR filter would be sufficient myself, but when I tested it with a TDS meter, it only went down about 15 (282 to 267... whereas I hear an RO/DI unit will get it down under 5, if not all the way to 0). So I'm buying one asap.... Actually was easy to sell my wife on, since she likes the idea of having filtered water to drink! :D

Ive tried all that. They just dont want to do it because she thinks I will have to drill holes in the walls and will be more complicated then it actually is. Considering it is a very simple set up. Its also basicly because we are moving in a year, and they dont want to deal with it again. I will get it for the new house for sure though. They dont care about drinking tap water...as long as its not killing them, they are fine with it. I kind of see where they are comming from though, concidering I basicly forced them to say yes to the saltwater idea.:) Thanks for your help guys, but it just wont happen. :nope:

You can buy faucet adapters for the units so all you have to do is attach it to the aerator on a single faucet, takes 2 seconds.

I'm not sure if the membrane dries out (would be good to know though! Anyone know about that??), but I think it will still run continuously, even with a hose adapter, unless you manually turn it off. I JUST purchased this unit last night (on the auction site) and that's what my plan is anyway! I don't really want to mess around with any pipes, so I'm getting the hose adapter, and setting it up in the basement sink.
FILTER DIRECT 110GPD RO+DI REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER FILTER $144 including shipping, hose adapter, faucet (for drinking water) and container.... Without the additions, you could get it for $109 (including shipping... adding just the hose adapter is just $8 more).

As long as you run a gallon or so through the unit each week there is no worry about the filter running dry, I turn my unit on as needed, but it is off most of the time, water stays in the unit the problem is when you leave old water sitting in it for too long.

Denasoro I got the same exact on from the same site, and I have had mine hooked up for a few months and love it, I also added a float to my sump/ so it automatically fills up when the water levels get too low. they are great to have.
