Who's Afraid of the Dentist?

I manage a dentist office that specializes in taking care of anxious patients. It amazes me how many people are fearful of the dentist and how much of it comes from horrible childhood experiences. How do you guys feel?

My dentist is nice and doesn't scare me but....no dentist has every hurt me before, I've only had one tiny cavity and when I had my wisdom teeth out I was asleep.....I think I would be a lot more fearful if I'd had bad experiences.

I dread going to the dentest and the barber.
I had 2 fillings come out and waited for over 2 years to get them fixed. Even have a good coverage insurance, just plain dreaded it. But it wasn't really all that bad. Guess the local anesthesia has come a long ways since I went last.
Still have problems with the barber. Don't know why but I usually wait till it looks like I just came out of the hills.

I will admit that I am afraid of the dentist... which would explain not going as often as I should. if only your place was closer lol. I got most of my fear when i was a lot younger from my mother having bad experiences...

Not me! I have good dental coverage and I like going to my dentist because he/she makes pain go away and regular maintenance visits keep it that way.
Plus, it's great excuse for coming in late to work-I always arrange my appointments for late morning so I get to sleep in a couple of hours

Been at the same prectice for 25 years; different dentists, different hygenists, but they have been keeping it real all those years!

im fine with the dentist its the hygenist that i absolutly dread, last time i went which was last week, she said i had gingivitus, which may all be possible but not i brush atleast 2 times a day and always have, i personally think that it has something to do with sticking the pick through my gums that they are bleeding not gingivitus.

I hate the dentist. I have not been to the dentist in 5 years until the first week of september. My dr rx me some meds for my first visit back, which helped a little. I don't know why I don't like the dentist. I had braces and once they were removed, the bands that they put on your teeth had destroyed the enamel on my teeth. I have had filling after filling. Just had 4 done this month. They numbed me up really well and it wasn't that bad.
Since I had my teeth clean I have had a constant toothache. Apparently I have been clenching (i can't spell) my teeth. Toothaches ARE THE WORST. My son was 8'9 and I had him natural and my teeth hurt worse. lol
I can take pain, my teeth are so sensitive, I just hate to go. I like the people and are glad they care for me. But boy I don't like to go.

You are really young to have gingivitis. Especially if you are brushing as often as you say, but you have to be brushing correctly. Done preaching.

LOVE the dentist and the cleaning. Oh, my teeth feel so good. I think I must have good genes when it comes to teeth. My 84 year old grandpa had every tooth in his head without problems. I have not had a filling in about 25 years. I brush at LEAST 2x a day and floss 1 x a day.
NOW I have been told that I sometimes take my daily frustrations out on my tooth brush and scrub really hard back and forth. We are supposed to use our toothbrushes in circular motions and not really hard.

I have to get my wisdom teeth out December 15th when I'm on break for school and I'm SCARED TO DEATH! I've never had a cavity or anything I'm seriously freaking out.

I'm embarrassed to say... I hate the dentist. I had bad experiences as a child and then some really good experiences as an adult.... was still afraid. Then I had another bad experience which is totally killing me. I have a tooth that is half shattered at the moment.... it's been like that for a year. And it's not like I don't know the ramifications of not going to take care of it... I shattered 3 teeth before and got an abcess from my neglect to fix it.... and still I don't go......
Jean, If you lived closer... I would be at your clinic.

I too look like I've just come out of the hills. And well, haven't been to the dentist in years.

Personally i'd leave them in. I had one, they had difficulty pulling. They sawed it in half, when I came of of there, I had a swoosh imprinted on my forehead.

Not scared, but I really hated my last one. He thought it was the funniest thing in the world to call me "Seen". My name, Shawn, is spelled correctly, not like the "Sean" variation. Every time he was like "Hi Seen."
I would always reply "I know, that's why we spelt it like we did." "I know, it's just funny, Seen, Seen, Seen...."

I love love love the dentist. I have had all the bad stuff too. Braces, multiple teeth pulled at the same time (my baby teeth didn't want to leave), drills, broken extractions, shots in the mouth, the whole nine yards. My wisdom teeth never developed under the gums so I didn't have to deal with that. I only got a cavity after I joined the military. Believe it or not, I wasn't allowed to brush my teeth for almost a month when I went into boot camp..

Sadly I am not joking. Ended up with two little cavities from it but they had the tooth colored fillers by that time so you can't see them. Luckily my mom was smart enough to get me the sealants on my molars when I was younger so I didn't have any cavities to deal with as a child.
Anyway, the reason I love the dentist is because I love cleanings!! If I could go once a week or month I would. I love that squeaky clean feeling you get after a good grinding.
Oh and everyone has some form of gingivitis in case you guys were wondering. They told me that too and I freaked out because I am crazy anal retentive about my teeth but I had more than one dentist tell me most people have gingivitis slightly before their teeth even fully come in (adult). You just don't want it to progress beyond the first or second stage.
