Chalk basslets are nice. Really nice. Hubby had one before we met. His went carpet surfing. But he's praising it up and down right now "A delightful little fish", he just said.
Is he English?? I got a picture in my head....."A delightful little fish"
Think they could hold up to my sixline. Don't get me wrong, so far the only trouble I've had with him is about 2 weeks ago, he decided all of a sudden he didn't like my poor little Mandarin. He beat her up pretty bad before I got her out. Since then he has been a model citizen. But the trust is gone.
Wish I could have caught him instead of my mandy, and he would be at the lfs now.

Well....I know I started this as an Anthias thread. But.........
My lfs had a nice little Tomini Tang last weekend. I think I will call them tomorrow and see if he's still there. If he is, I think I will get him.
Then I will get 2 "delightful little fish". (chalk basslets) and call my tank stocked(again).....I have other tanks to work on.
Sorry, Cran, you will have to ask BTLD to be your data source on the Lyretails.

Yea, usually fed 3x-4x a day, but like I mentioned 2 of those is usually just a pitch or two of pellets, as I'm walking by the tank. Only one real meal a day. Figure with the Anthias, Leopard wrasse, and GS mandarin, it doesn't hurt. Water changes are 10gal a week on about 100gal total system (90DT, 29 sump).
The chalk basses are pretty cool and they're an Atlantic fish which I love getting. They were at the LFS for at least 2 months in a little holding tank. I wasn't terribly interested as I had 3 Lyretails at the time, but guilt got the best of us. They had an extended QT stay because of the display losing the two Lyretails, I wanted to make sure the tank was fine. After adding, the big female lyretail chased them a lot, but after a while she calmed down.
Yea, I'm not sure why you don't see them more often. They're a really hardy fish, mine have survived multiple tanks moves. And they're really a gorgeous fish in person. Here's a pic of one of mine. Keep in mind, these are the largest Chalks I've ever seen, gill spines and everything. They look just like little groupers...

Just to clarify, we are saying that a lone female anthias in a tank will turn into a male? I'm searching but I'm not finding. But at any rate, you can see my lone female after 8 years did not convert..
Taken from Keeping the Jewels of the Reef: the Anthias of the genus Pseudanthias
By Scott W. Michael:
"One drawback in keeping some male anthias (e.g., Lyretail Anthias), in an aquarium without conspecifics is that their color may change and become more like that of the female."
He also mentions that a single female kept as the only representative Anthias is far LESS likely to change to male coloration. A group of female anthias, as mentioned above, will have a pecking order in which the dominant female will become male.....but that my dear was not your question.

BTW the article I quoted came from the doctor's live site. Just type "Anthias" in its search parameters and you'll find it.

Thanks, Novahobbies, for the research and helpful info. Your the best.
Thanks to everyone for all the info. and all the terrific pics.
You helped me make my decision(even though it wasn't close to where I started)
I went to lfs and purchased the Tomini and ordered 2 Chalk Basslets.

Oh, Would still love more Anthias posts and pics. if anyone would like to contribute more. Just because this tank is stocked, doesn't mean I can't get another one.

I was home, I accidently dropped the canopy door (heavy home made) and the bottom glass broke. Yes I saved all but one female anthias and a cleaner shrimp and sold them. your unlikely to experience what I did. didn't help the tank was made in 1988 and had no centerbracing.
