Ok so I got pretty excited cause I got a Powerder Blue Tang for $40 and I noticed there are some beautiful fish out there but they range in the $100s!!!!!

What makes some of these fish so expensive?

what are the cost of collection. does it take a boat ride out to some single island chain in the middle of no where or can you take a 15 minute trip dive down and be home that afternoon. also how many can be collected at one time i think plays a major role.

Availability, costs to ship, house, feed, rarity, demand, supply, supply, demand, operating costs, demand, supply... oh wait.
There are some beautiful fish out there but my limit now is 150ish if I find EXACTLY what I'm looking for. My "someday" tank in my "someday" house... well then the sky is the limit

$100's. You will really be shocked when you do a little research and fine many in the $1000's. Like stated above supply and demand.

Most I would spend on a fish would probably be $150. I cant see spending hundreds on something that could die a week later.

People spend 10's of thousands on somethign that gets them from point A to point B just like a car that cost 2,000 will do the same thing -- just not as "pretty". If someone can afford it don't knock their hobbies :p

I once went to a mall with my girlfriend who freaked out when I paid $250 for a cassette deck. Ten minutes later she laid down her plastic to the tune of $300 for a skirt without blinking. Go figure. Priorities right.

p.s. I think she wore that skirt ONCE, but we danced many a night away listening to tunes...

Great philosophy but I'd think it applies better to wives instead of fish!

well for me its not really the money, its the loss of the fish. i just bought an orange spotted goby for 20 bucks, and i found it on the floor when i came back from school. i dont care of the 20 dollars, i just want my fish back!!

I want what I want. I will throw the coin down. I will own a Clarion Angel in the next year or so. I need a bigger tank first and foremost. I will also have a DME

You wanna get sick? A friend caught a Clarion in a net while snorkeling at Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point to gringos) He put it in a 10# ice bag for me. The a**holes from ICE (immigration and customs enforcement)searched his cooler and threw it in the trash-yes a live beautiful fish. Said live animals are not allowed. I was told it was about 8". I hope he/she burns in h@ll. Point is clarions are all over the sea of Cortez. There is no reason they are so expensive.

That does it, the more I think about it, the more I'm determined to drive the 5 hours to Puerto Penasco and get one. ICE has no right to stop us from bringing these fish in. Heck, maybe I'll bring a bunch if I can find them.

A dog costs $300 - 1000's depending on the breed and they live 8-15yrs. Some SW fish live 20+yrs.
I don't understand the big price on fish problem.
