Why did you decide to have a saltwater tank?

ever since i was little i was fascinated with marine biology and wanted a fish tank to. sp for my birthday my brother got me a 10g tank with two goldfish in it and that set off a chain reaction, A few years later one of the goldfish (my twin brothers) died and i wanted to do something with mine. So i got a 29g tank and filled it with rocks water and plants and put my fish in there. over the years we added two silver dollars, a catfish (cant remeber what kind), a pearl, and yellow gourami, a red bay shnook (didnt live long) was replaced by my favorite fish i ever had, an orange savirum, and a pleco. about a month after my savirum died my older brother (the one who got me into all of this) pushed me and my other brother (my twin) to convert it to saltwater. I was reluctant to but the next week we took all our fish to my cousins 55g tank and emptied ours, scrubbed it, and filled it with saltwater, sand, and some live rock from the origonal ten gallon that my older bro. made into a saltwater clown tank. The clownfish was added to the 29g the same day we set the tank up. The next day we got some live rock with our first coral as a hitchhiker (the mushrooms). Then since we got the shrooms, my older brother said we'd have to get a better light, cost me 80$ for my PC light. (thats when i realized this was not a cheap hobby. And thats how i got my first satlwater tank. Now that this got me thinking back, i realized how much money i had into all of those tanks. great.

SW because it is obviously more attractive than FW though harder to maintain but still worth it, because of the happiness it gives. Saltwater fish are swims more lively than the FW

I always had a freshwater tank while I was growing up that my dad took care of. Eventually I started to take over things and just decided one day that I would take a stab at saltwater. I bought one of those 29gal AGA "boxed" sets which I kept for a while before upgrading to my 55gal. That was about 8-9 years ago-ish. Still have my first SW fish too.

I really miss the simplicity of the FW tanks, but I've always thought reefs were more impressive. I might set up a discus tank sometime soon though.. Also, when we had freshwater tanks and a few ice storms it was nice to be able to restock a 50gal tank for about $50 after the power had been out for a while. I could buy one decent coral for that much (that's why we have a generator now).

LOL...The most expensive freshwater fish I ever bought was a large angelfish for $25.00, I had it for years and years.

I paid $119.00 for a flame angelfish that lived for 1 day.

My wife was using a 150 gallon to hold magazines...most expensive magazine rack I ever saw...after living with her for 6 months I decided to start it up...she came home..magazines were stored away and the tank was full cycling away......

I had a big pile of money stacking up every month that I decided needed to be spent on something so I thought a saltwater tank would burn through it pretty fast!

A close friend of mine has a loaded 180 gallon reef. He got it for $500 from a corporation we worked for that disolved. Deal of a lifetime. Anyway I was fascinated with it and decided to start my own. Built up the 50 gallon reef and then the Mantis tank. They were were great while I had them but I have too many expensive hobbies so that tanks had to go. I'll probably do another one day.
