My findings are that the lawnmower blenny is the closest thing to a pleco, In my opinion that is. Mine is awesome and a super algae cleaner. He even gets the stuff on glass.

I have often wondered if it would be possible to slowly acclimate a placo to salt...If so,it sure would be a ground breaking addition to cleanup crews..You could also make ALOT of money till people figure out how it is done...Maybe I'll try it sometime...

The problem with the pleco is that its the juveniles that clean film algae, once they get older they like meat, like your oscar.
I wish they were saltwater, they'de do well in agressive tanks!

sorry to bust your bubble folks........but the saltwater pleco has been tried.....and failed......it took me three days to raise the salinity to 1.011 before he went to the fish tank in the sky

Uncalled for, and no reply wanted? I seem to remember this being a discussion board, where people post their views. In almost EVERY cycling post, there is a comment about how we should use dead shrimp, not live damsels to cycle, as it is cruel. But you want to try to convert a fish from fresh to saltwater just so it can save you from having to clean your tank of algee. Knowing full well that it "probably" die when you attempt this. Talk about cruel. So, don't repremand me for having an opinion on what is cruel, everyone here has an opinon on it one way or another. I'm not trying to make an enemy here Salty, but it's your comment that was uncalled for, not mine, I just don't want to see fish killed for experimentation.

just a thought.....It is because of experimentation that we have this hobby today...and without it there would be no room for success and failure, also whenever you set up your tank, that is experimentation the only reason it does not kill all the fish in there is because you are using methods that were based on experimentation...

good thought ice. I have 2 views on that myself. First one is the original question why didnt "God" make saltwater plecos. If it was necessary he would have. But man oh man I really want one and I'll be darned if I dont figure how.

Guys and Girls...
I have worked w/ fresh water fish for years and years...and my opinion is that a pleco is nothing more than a waste maker. They get too big and overstay their welcome (and they arent that great at algae control).
if we want to talk about god...lets talk about the hands god gave you to use your algae scrapper ;)

Plecos are only the 2nd best algae eaters according to most books, the first are some little grey things that start with o ? I have one, but I have no idea how to spell the word witho0ut it right in front of me. BTW, let's all calm down and go look at our fish tanks :D The best medicine of all!

I agree with Jillian........oh yeah, once the pleco gets so big they get lazy and stop eating algea and start looking for more meaty food...

did you get your tank yet ?

I've had many plecos over the years, and had one that got over a foot long, but it just kept sucking on the glass and crapping... quite a lot in fact (the entire fisht ank was covered in long strings of it), but I never saw him want meat. Even when he died in a mass death that claimed EVERY SINGLE fish in my fw tank (I still don't know what it was), we had to unstick him from the side of the tank cause his mouth was stuck in a sucking position there. As for the little 'o' things, I used to have one, but then my Sfrican butterfly ate it (along with my frog, 8 tetras, and another cleaner fish), and didn't have it long enough to see it clean. These two I now have I got yesterday. The books all say they are the best cleaners out there. Rigth now, they're stuck to the glass sucking away. Well, one just got caught in the bubble curtain and is kinda getting tossed around... I'm sure he will reattach. Yep, there he goes. If anyone knows the name of these 'o' things, I'll be glad to confirm or deny it. But right now, I'm just too tired to travel to Wal*mart and look at the name on the side of their tanks filled with dead fish :(
