Why do you Love Clams?

I currently have three types...the squamosa and derasa pictured above...and the small blue maxima here...it was purchased as a 3" infant...

But...I suppose the major reason I enjoy keeping mine is this...locally there are several hobbyists that wish they could keep clams...and many of them have visited my home and seen mine. I do keep them....they don't. One friend that comes by simply can't believe how well mine have done...and wishs he could establish a system that could maintain clams like mine has.....that provides me with a personal sense of satisfaction that in itself explains why I enjoy keeping them.

Oh, I see! You keep them to show off. Now I understand.

I have to admit that all the pics here are inspiring.
NMReef, what about those candycanes in the sand? Do they do ok there?

Not normally. The small frag you saw was there only for a short while...until it stabalised and was re-located. I'll be fragging a few more soon along with some torch/hammer/frogspawn.....after splitting them I like to lower them to the sand to allow them to recover and stabalise.Eventually they'll either be traded off...returned to a trusted LFS for credit...given away to local reefers...or sold to a couple of clients I maintain systems for.:)

...and I don't concede its only about showing off....it is more a pleasent sense of accompolishment. It pleases me that I have been able to establish a system that can maintain healthy clams...and it pleases folks that visit my reef.

I gotta admit...it does provide a sense of pleasure to show it off....this is a major reason I have invested as much as I have...both in time and money....

I'm a wannbe clam owner
I hope to be able to keep them in my 300.
I guess it's like one more rare thing that people don't see in tanks...
Where corals and anenomes are now more commonplace...
There are only a few things that are Rare and hard to keep, which help to make your tank stand out from all the rest.

Beth, do you mean the inhalant siphon? Earlier I posted about how long it took for the clam to grab a good foot hold. I dont remember asking about a hole tho...
